I would argue, however, for taking your mother's advice more seriously. Mine never mentioned Africa for the simple reason that one doesn't have to look that far to see starving people. Saving food is first a matter of principle, before a matter of practicality. It is just plain wrong, because even if it doesn't help Africans, it may others. On the issue of food aid in general, I take a political perspective, not a domestic one.
