Sabeer Bhatia, The Hot Male, Launches BlogEverywhere

March 06, 2006

Sabeer Bhatia sold Hotmail.com to Microsoft for a whopping $400 million in 1998. Next, he tried his "heart's desire" with Arzoo.com. It was made to bridge the gap of corporates with technology experts for problem solving assistance. However, the 9/11 of the internet (in simpler terms, the dotcom bust) did not spare even pioneers like him. Arzoo.com shutdown in 2001 with a note attributing its non existence to it's larger customers not willing to pay for the "nice to have" service.

Sabeer Bhatia is back on the tech scene (Literally too. He was on CNN-IBN at 9PM and MTV at 11pm on 6th March 2006.) with another dotcom. He has entered the space which is close to many of our hearts - Blogs. The new venture is called BlogEverywhere.com.

I have a personal and maybe illogical resistance to toolbars and BlogEverywhere is all about what is being called "BlogBar". However, I went ahead and downloaded it to get a feel of how it works. Click... Click... And nothing happens. I am on Windows 2003 server & I suppose it does not work since the listed OS in the FAQ are only Windows 2000 & Windows XP! Neither am I able to register online. "Server is busy, Please try again later." is what I get. All you FireFox lovers, you need to fire up IE to see BlogBar work. The firefox version will be out soon.

BlogEverywhere.com aims to provides a simple way to post and read comments on webpages and promote user participation in exchanging thoughts and opinions. All this with a click on the blogbar.

For those already at BlogEverywhere, I am sure you are gazing at the Video iPod that will be given to the winner of the Best Blog contest.

Meanwhile, it might not be fair to say that Sabeer Bhatia was doing nothing in the intervening time. He was involved atleast with:
• Voice mail services (Navin Communications)
• Collaboration solution (InstaColl)
• Travel dotcom (HotSeasons.com)
• VoiFi (VoIP project)

And if you have seen Spice Telecom's (GSM mobile operator in Indian states of Karnataka & Punjab) ad on Telixo which supposedly converts your phone into a PDA, that was powered by Sabeer's Navin!

There is one odd aspect to BlogEverywhere. He uses the term "Fast Hotmail - Experience Fast Hotmail with Blogbar". Wonder why he aims to enhance the Hotmail experience in a blogging solution. Maybe he is still in love with his first creation. Maybe he expects to bring back those good fortunes.

They need web editors - check out the grammar on their contest page:

Win a free Video iPod in our Best Blog contest. Just follow few simple steps, and you could be lucky one to have Video iPod.

* Step 1 - Download blogbar:
go to download link, download blogbar and intall it.
* Step 2 - Register :
as you finish installation, you need to register, in order to write blog.
* Step 3 - Visit any website of your choice. Click write blog icon on blogbar and start blogging on web.
* Step 4 - Rate your own blog as you evaluate how much star rating it should have.
* Step 5 - Tell your friends to download the toolbar and register. simply using refer link visible on top right corner of web application.

Looks like a very adhoc job, not offering anything new to the world - a billion blogging services exist, and blog toolbars are also commonplace.

Everyone forgets Jack Smith, the co-founder of Hotmail

Hotmail is to Sabeer Bhatia as Sholay was to Ramesh Sippy.

Dead on Arrival.

Sabeer Bhatia wants to jump onto the Web 2.0 bandwagon, and this is his big idea? Somebody tell him about del.ici.ous !

Well... I won't completely write off Sabeer Bhatia and BlogEverywhere at this point. Blogs have a long way to go before the masses get hooked to it and I have not seen any killer app for blogs which can do that yet.

Free email did that for emails. What is it for blogs? If I knew I would been making that now :)

Rajiv, the point is that this thing does absolutely nothing new. It does not do the old thing better either. Seriously, an IE toolbar?
del.ici.ous has been giving the same functionality for ages, and its been doing it with no toolbar (you can add a browser button in a single click though).

I predict that this new venture is doomed to ignominious failure.

Hello

I can't be bothered with anything these days, but shrug. I just don't have anything to say recently.

Bye
