Jessica Lal: A Grassroots Beginning for Justice
Anouradha Bakshi
A comment on one of the latest posts on the Jessica Lal issue made me stop and think. It simply said:"and what are YOU, personally doing about it".
The operative word to my mind is personally. It is pregnant with meaning: sending an impersonal SMS is not really doing something. True, it is adding your voice, but one that remains anonymous.
How many of us would lend our name to this campaign and come out in the open. How many of us would leave the comfort of our lives and carry out a sustained effort to see that justice is done? Today Jessica's face looms large on the TV screens of our homes, but maybe tomorrow or the day after other images will appear.
And yet, Jessica Lal's case raises many issues and these not only pertain to muscle, money or power and the mockery of justice, but touch the core of our roles as citizens.
Will we after today stop and help a person in danger, report a crime, stand as a witness, stop paying facilitation money, respect the law, pay a traffic violation? Those will be more relevant questions to ask.
If all the hue and cry that we hear today comes to a naught, muscle and money would have won. We have to realize that by sending that anonymous SMS, we have embarked on the proverbial journey of a thousand miles. That we have taken a small step forward to get justice done for Jessica.

Your todays post is a classic example of what has ailed our country for generations, which is keep drilling the morbid and the unsatisfactory in the life of an Indian citizen instead of highlighting or opting to highlight the good, encourage it and ensure in the bargain the continuance of that single step to metamorphe into a giant wave.
I have often been witness to these do gooders who hate to see the spotlight away from themselves. One would have imagined that you and others like you would have hailed this immense change in the Indian mindset and applauded it. Instead of focussing on the thousand miles ahead and put a damper, it would have been appropriate to hail the beginning. Point out if I am wrong, but I do not remember Ever Indians giving such an unprecedented response of 'nonacceptance' to a verdict. I am an optimist and was touched and heartened by this awakening. Why jump the gun? Take it slowly.
To take on a personal comment from my post written by an alias under a fake url,(wonder who?) which was uncalled for in the first place, in its text..as to what am I doing about it, was rude and offensive and then make that along with my views the focus of your next post is demeaning and mean spirited. We each have to ask ourselves what we are doing and open our mouths to only encourage others in what they are doing. You not only take a rather personal attack on me as a valid question, highlight it and then chose to take apart my whole post to do what? glorify what? You? Or Your Great Efforts? Good for you.. congrats. But it does not give you the right to belittle others efforts. No single individual was ever able change events for the better in the country.
It has to be a sustained, continuous, collaborative effort and UNSELFISH to the core. If the mentality is going to be such that what does not feature me is not worth the mention, then we are going to remain in the rut we have.
I refrain from wearing my deeds as a medal on me or my blog. It is unimportant to tell you or the world, how responsible a citizen I am .It is not going to further the cause. It pleases you to do so, go ahead suit yourself. But do not undermine the efforts of any of us in doing whatever we are, however, we are, in however small a manner, and whether or not it fits into your scheme of how it should be or what impact it finally is going to have.
Let us all try and be good human beings first, before we try to become GOd.. India has need for those who can lead and encourage, those who can give a tap on the back rather than a scowl on the face for non performance.
Thriving on creating fear and insecurity is the livelihood of many a people. It certainly is not mine. I prefer to yell a shout of delight at a single meritorious deed. I am not the CEO of India, nor are you. each voice counts and is precious, whether it is on a blog, read by thousands, or an sms sent. It is time taken off, it is a concern shown , it is a gesture to express non acceptance. If this is not enough to show the huge uprising in this case, then by the same logic, why vote?? after all it is ONLY A SINGLE VOTE.
At the risk of reiteration ..do not underestimate the power of even a drop to reach the ocean.

I am sad to see that what I wrote was taken in this spirit.. this was not my intention.. far from it but do accept my apologies..
what you say is right and I hope that this effort will see the results we all hope..
i did not mean to be offensive but just wanted each one of us to realise the role we could play..
I for one beleive in the power of one, but to me it slso means accepting the responsibility of what is wrong and the fact that even a small gesture on our part can change it..
maybe I have seem to many beginnings..
one again I am sorry for any hurt caused

Apologies accepted with an open heart.
Yes I was hurt because I am passionate about what I do and have in my own small way tried to make a purposeful impact on a regular basis for years now. Maybe all of that another time. I do not believe that we have to go out on the roads to prove our point.
Apart from that I'd rather embrace the positive and nurture it, nourish it so that it may flourish. Hopefully It will.

Sure Anouradha..For me living in India and being in love with it simultaneously is my way of "not hanging my gloves up'..

Anouradha: (and also for the rest of us) - here is an opportunity to help out in another travesty of justice.
The blog where I picked up this information mentions:
News channels are not asking you to send sms-es for Bant Singh, but you can do your bit.
