Music Review: Britney Spears - Gimme More
Temple Stark
There are plenty of people, including Desi bloggers, who obsess over Britney Spears. Not the music, naturally, as it was never anything to obsess about in the first place. Still, if Britney's going to channel her over-abundant energy, music is one of the healthier ways to do it.
Still Britney and the presence she now is, was NEVER about the music, and she's not talented enough in any capacity to ever make it so. That's not a reason to be disgusted by her, though.
Gimme More is either the teaser song to her upcoming November album or its first single. As in the realm of politics, it's a trial balloon. Her handlers are putting it out there to see if people like it. If not, they know to change their approach.
Here's the phrase that comes to mind after listening to the song: Abort the Mission. Abort. Abort. Abort.
That "Gimme More" might be a club hit, is not a guarantee, but it's rapidly becoming the conventional wisdom. The whole affair starts with a "It's Britney, Bitch" spoken declaration and that's the best part. The entire song gets slightly better if you listen to it a few times. A TI remix adds a welcome deeper buzzing to this as well, but not much more.
Still, "Gimme More"? That's either the most brazen "fuck you, I can take it" line (not at all borne out by the lyrics, unfortunately) or it's Britney continuing to be Britney, which at this point isn't a good thing. Is Britney totally unaware of the fuck-up she's become, of the open ridicule she faces for her actions beyond music, which started from her ill-fated, even-then-a-copy "Britney and Kevin: Chaotic" TV program? This highlighted so much about B.J. (Britney Jean) Spears that could not be admired.
"Gimme More" also ends in an pronouncement from the producer Nate Hills that this is the "legendary Ms. Britney Spears." Act like you've been there before, comes to mind. Infamous is the better word choice here.
Two other new songs have been leaked, "Cold as Fire" which is more fun, but still has the lack of self-awareness with its juiced-box subject matter. It's better than "Gimme More" just because it's different from the usual, but her voice has been digitally stretched to surgical-enhanced proportions.
Britney songs that have packed sizzling heat include, "I've Got That, Boom Boom", "Toxic." "Chaotic" and, "I'm A Slave 4 U" despite the character weakness displayed in the title. "Lucky" also told a coherent story that likely connected with many fans. "Isn't she lovely this Hollywood girl? ... If there's nothing missing in my life, then why do these tears come at night."
But, really, doesn't "Gimme More" have instant Macarena status? That is, it took months for that song (and dance) to become a cliche and passe and now it's relegated to breaking the ice at wedding receptions, reunions and the happier-brand of funerals. But you don't hear it at clubs anymore because it's embarrassing and no longer new.
Doesn't "embarrassing" and "no longer new" perfectly describe Britney Spears now? The fact she's trying to project coolness when she's done so much in the public eye to come off as clueless, doesn't work. Does Tanya Harding still skate professionally? Is R. Kelly producing music? Does OJ have NFL endorsements? Does a bear wipe his ass in the woods with a fluffy white rabbit?
In this way, Britney Spears has prematurely aged. Can she create a new persona or enter a different musical room? Let's hope so, because she can no longer carry off what she could before. She is no longer credible. Trouble is, her voice is all breath and no body, and this will make highlighting her voice a problem.
She's filled the same niche from the beginning. The world acted surprised when In The Zone was released because it expressed a more sexual side of Britney Spears. The world was deluding itself. She was a cock-tease from the beginning with "Oops, I Did It Again."
People still believed her good southern girl act, except she was also in a Catholic School girl uniform. In that song she even says, "I'm not that innocent" and people a year later swallowed, despite much evidence to the contrary, that she could be a virgin. Her first hit, "Hit Me Baby, One More Time" - which mentioned "loneliness" ("My loneliness is killing me") like so many of her songs do - more than amply demonstrated that she couldn't sing as she warbled out, "Oh baby baby, how was I supposed to knoooo--ohhhhhh? that something wasn't right."
Still people enabled her success because, well, I'm not completely sure why. She was hot, but guys weren't the ones buying the music, for the most part. There's another aspect to this that's worth mentioning. Guys first want to be rock stars because they "get the chicks." This raises the questions, why do they get the chicks and the flip side, what drives girls to want to be like Britney Spears? It's a puzzlement of society why people like Britney Spears achieve success in the little girl record-buying demographic. What, other than the success and money itself, makes girls think she's an example of anything worth emulating?
In the immortal words of Eminem, "Britney Spears is garbage." Yep, that's harsh and I feel bad for saying it but feel worse that it's been true for a long time. Sure anyone can feel sorry for her or wish her the best in life but that doesn't mean we have to listen.

Yes! 50 cent is chump change now. I have a friend whose daughter worships 50 cent who would kick me in the kneecaps right now if she read this
50 cent is a talent too, but he's too caught up projecting what he thinks / knows his fans want, without trying to earn new ones. i'm not one, but I'm not a hater either, i just don't listen. See last line of review above. ...

Not to start a debate about hip-hop R&B trends on an article about Soppy Spears but I think that West and 50 have separate fan bases and then some that overlap. Their styles are very distinct. West has a soul base and 50 has an interesting gangsta rap feel to his lyrics. The arty Chicago soul on one, the dark alleys of NY on the other. The former has some arty satire and the latter has raw confessionalism. West is for the eclectics who want poetry in their rap and the 50 is for those who want the vicarious thrill of truth and stories in their rap.
But both are equally appealing to someone like me who lives for hip-hop :D
I think its a tie Aaman :) LOVE 'em both!!

I think Britney needs to take a leaf out of her buddy Madge's book about reinventing herself. After all, the Material Girl has been there, done that, got the t-shirt, blah bla blah. And she is still going on! (That it's high time she took up knitting full time is another story!)

She wouldn't have achieved her status had she not had talent. Even though her personal life post-divorce has grabbed headline after headline, Britney Spears became a phenomenon based on her first smash single "...Baby One More Time" (great music, if not fluff) and continued with hit after hit. Like her or not, she has you and the world writing about her.....just like Madonna before her. How can one call her untalented when there is obvious evidence of vocal talent in her younger days? How can someone call someone else untalented when they personally do not know them? Please, get a life.

It is true! She has a vocal talent and she has proven that during star search! She doesnt need to hit the high note for us to enjoy her music. We are all entertained by her that s why she is a star.If she made a mistake, she is human too just like you!

Chris E. is every famous entertainer talented? Let's start there. I'm sure yu love and respect everyone because of their talent even if they're not your personal taste????
Some people are the products of packaging.
Honestly, have you seen her dance even at her most famous. It's by the numbers. You can see her remembering the moves as she moves, it does not come naturally.
The rest of your comment is about success, not talent. What's people writing about you got to do with anything? A few million words have been penned about serial killers and Josef Stalin, as well. I guess they're talented.
Madonna, sickeningly pretentious now, has one thing up on Britney - she's smart. That one thing actually gives you the ability to say something meaningful. That is also useful.
What do you personally like about Britney Spears' voice or dancing? That she used to be able to sing when she was kid is not an endorsement of her now.
How can someone tell someone else to get a life when they personally do not know whether they have one? Read the piece again and address some of the points. I'd be grateful.

I wonder if Britney know something about her own ancestry and their place in the history of Amercia if she would behave better.
Well, lets see how she does at the MTV awards..
From the wordpress blog: Your Future, Your Past
"History pivots on small events. If one Indian had not disobeyed his Chief, there would be no Family ForestŪ today, and maybe no Britney Spears (her 10th great-grandfather George Pace was born well before the massacre, and may or may not have been at Jamestown at the time)."

Well, I respect your opinion, but I think, Britney is a good performer. Good enough to become a star. Of course, there is marketing, and people around her, who helped her to get to the top. But there are people who helped her to get to the bottom. I've never been a fun of Britney, eventhough I like some songs of hers. But still, when I watched her show, I was still impressed. It is not easy to stand up and perform in front of 5000 people. It must be something about her, when there are millions of people who admire her.

next, you have a point, though I did talk about the song and its three main elements - a high, digitally enhanced breathy voice, her intro and a club beat. There's not much there there.
There's a buzzing slow BPM backbeat. The song has her talking about being the center of attention, without any self-reflection.
"Every time they turn the lights down, just want to go that extra mile for you. That display of affection, feels like no one else in the room
Her vacuity is on full display.
That's the rest of my review. I put the song in context of who she's become and why it all rings hollow (er).
Somehow you read the whole thing, though so it must have engaged at some point. Thank you. Do you agree? how would you review a song that says nothing and has very few elements? go for it. I could be wrong.

Rasti, she chose this profession. She's been in front of crowds from a very young age.
Admire? That's an interesting word. If people do admire her, I'd be interested as to why. THere are so many igly aspects of her personality, i have to wonder. Again, I don't wish her ill will at all.
But's she's a very stupid person who was beautiful. Still is on the surface but has made very many horrible personal decisions. It's who she is. Admire?

Her life is far more entertaining than her singing. From crotch and butt showing fiascoes along with allegations of child neglect people naturally find her personal more interesting than Brangelinas.
Britney can never make a comeback in the music world. Her time is up!What she can do is be a part of some reality show like Big Brother;)

I cannot believe that there actually are people who have come to defend Britney's "vocal talent" after her numerous very public showdowns :) Now I don't feel so bad about being attacked by Aishwarya Rai fans. At least AR has some class.
#7 Chris: Having a Britney Spears fan telling someone else to get a life is pretty ironic :D

Britney in less than half an hour is about to astound the world or suck out loud at the MTV VMA awards.
I forgot, but should not have considering my point about little girls and horny boys buying Britney Spears, how silly discussing the purest (or impurest) of pop music can be.
I had a person e-mail me directly with these wordsm in total: You Suck / Britney Rules. Swirl.
I responded, and I wished I could use drunkenness as an excuse, "I Rule, Britney Sucks. Swoon."
This got a "WTF" in response, which was my first reaction on reading the original e-mail.
He, if she wants to jump in a hot tub with me, great, (the bubbles hide a lot) as long as I've got my iPod on, listening to oh, let's say, the Connecticut Department of Vehicles podcast. Or the few good Britney songs listed in the orginal post.

TS - AHAHAHAA, I can't believe you went ahead and listened to the other songs. I listened to this one when it began making the rounds and while its not the death of pop music as we know it like some people have been saying, I felt pretty much what you felt to the point of utter boredom. And I decided to leave the rest alone. btw, Did you catch her act at the VMAs? At this point, its pretty much why does she bother because she's such as a trainwreck everybody's going to pick on that rather than her career. She really ought to go away for a bit, put her life in order and come back sans wig and drama.
Oh and kanye vs 50? I just saw 50 hanging out with Paris the other day so I guess we can all now get on the Decline and Fall of 50 Cent bandwagon coz you know that's the omen of death.

I quote myself in #9 above, from before the VMAs:
Honestly, have you seen her dance even at her most famous. It's by the numbers. You can see her remembering the moves as she moves, it does not come naturally.
I watched it specifically for her, so I would know what I was talking about. If she would have rocked the house, I would have said so.
She did not.
The point I'm trying to make is, sure feel compassion, but don't encourage her career at this point, it doesn't exist. Go away now, find a talent, raise a couple of good kids and be a better person. We as Audience, should not listen to and watch utter self-destruction just because we feel sorry for her.
I posted a little bit about that here:
The San Jose Mercury News had a great opinion piece.
And the best headline, surprisingly, came from AOL.com, which had "It's Britney (Glitch)" I'm still laughing at that.
Piling on isn't anything to admire either, so I'll stop now, but this type of thing does need to be said. I'm surprised, though, how many people are saying it in major newspapers etc.
.. and yes, Kanye sounded great at the VMA's. I watched a little bit of it later, and it was like Web cams were at a big party. Strange, but it pretty much worked.
