The Bangladesh Win - India's 'Contribution'
Rezwanul Islam
I present three instances of how India perceived the Bangladesh cricket team before the match.
1) SET Max channel airs a promo of their Extraaa Innings program starring panelists Mandira Bedi and Charu Sharma. They show 9 teams including the number ten in ODI ranking Zimbabwe but leaves out the number 9 Bangladesh.
2) DD National channel airs The Fourth Umpire, a cricket analysis program. Their episode during the India-Bangladesh match contained Indian cricket legends like Chetan Sharma and Kris Srikanth among the panel. They were discussing how India will win this World Cup and which players will contribute to what extent.
Then there was the public opinion section via telephone. An young Indian was asked, "In last match Gibbs has hit six sixes an over. So what India will do today?" He said, "Dhoni will strike 7 sixes an over today." How? "Bangladesh will produce a no ball which will be dispatched over the rope again." Then the panelists were laughing at Bangladesh being a minnow and Srikkanth's view seemed like they deserved the 7 sixes an over.
Srikkanth dismissed any chance of Bangladesh causing an upset. Another panelist Anjum mentioned Bangladesh had beaten New Zealand in an warm up match. Srikkanth remarked that all this was rubbish. There is a vast difference between India and Bangladesh so Bangladesh cannot win.
India has come to win the World Cup. If they lose today they should take the next flight home. Everybody was laughing. Chetan Sharma commented India should not take Bangladesh seriously. If India should respect Bangladesh then they should not have come to this World Cup.
During the match break Srikkanth was upset with India's paltry total of 191. After some discussions he commented that it was the Indian batsmen who gifted their wicket , the Bangladeshi bowlers had really done nothing special. Chetan Sharma thought that Bangladesh batting is not that strong. Srikkanth still thought that India should take the next flight home if they lose.
After the end of the game as India lost to Bangladesh, Chetan and Srikkanth were not there to comment. People were wondering whether they went to the travel agent to confirm the Indian team's return ticket. Anjum, the other presenter thought that Bangladesh may cause another upset to beat Sri Lanka to provide a chance for India in the World Cup. Wow! what a complete turn around of assessment about Bangladesh.
3) Bangladesh has toured every Test cricket nation except India. Because cricket is a business to them and having Bangladesh is commercially unprofitable. A tour with a said minnow is commercially unattractive for the media and advertisers. India last toured Bangladesh in 2004 December.
Bangladesh beat India for the first time then. After that India cancelled their next scheduled tour to Bangladesh twice and did not play them in the last couple of years. The reasons suspected was again commerce. So India chose to defer it till May 2007. I am not sure whether they will come to Bangladesh or invite back Bangladesh as there will always be excuses available.
So what can you say about the above instances? Simple arrogance and looking down on others has caused India this disgrace. As the saying goes, "none are more unjust in their judgments of others than those who have a high opinion of themselves". India took their eyes off Bangladesh, who progressed a lot in 2006. Their techniques got better and they are getting used to winning albeit most of the opponents were not from the super eight of Cricket.
This simple arrogance also sieged the Indian cricket team who came to the field without in-form Sreesanth and Kumble and decided to bat first, probably with a score like 350 in mind. And the pressure on the players was immense as they found Bangladesh bowlers using the conditions and maintaining line and length. When Bangladesh was batting they just had no clue why these eighteen year olds were not respecting the paper tiger bowlers. While Bangladesh had a game plan they had no plan "B" to tackle the surprise.
Anand Vasu says in Cricinfo that:
Bangladesh have slowly, steadily, doggedly worked at their cricket to the best of their ability for years now, and the fruit of that is this win. The point is that they have been around for a while now, it's just that not too many have taken note.
The Bangladeshi newspaper Prothom Alo said this win is a reply to the Indians' disrespect vis-a-vis Bangladesh. Bangladesh has proved to India that what is commerce to them is merely a game for them. The article concludes with the hope that India is put down on their feet with this shock. If they still cannot revise their opinion about Bangladesh they will be reminded in the coming tour.
Now India will go nowhere with blaming players and the coach for this loss. Cricket is religion, passion and everything to Indians. Actually millions of Indian cricket fans deserve better from the Indian team. And this will happen when all the extra pressure of high expectations and influence of commerce in cricket are reduced.
Let the Indian team play for themselves. Not for the cup, but for the sheer pleasure of the game. India has enough good players to become a champion but now it may be too late for this World Cup.

Rezwanul - I don't watch the cricket shows on TV so I'll take your word for it but I have to say that in most Indian newspapers, at least the ones I read, people definitely saw Bangladesh as a threat. People have been making quips about India being in the group of death and whatnot. So I think its more a players issue than anything else.
Secondly, you have a valid point about cricket's importance - esp in the wake of Woolmer's death, it's time we all sort of did a rethink. But you're out if you think Cricket Bangladesh isnt interested in the commerce of it. Sports internationally, and not just cricket in India, is big business and thats a trend thats not going anywhere.

I agree with Amrita and Rezwanul both in fact. It is true that from a player and cricket analyst's prespective India has no respect for Bangladesh or any of the smaller nations of cricket. And this resulted in India being taught a master class lesson in HOW TO WIN A CRICKET game. It is also true that cricket or any sport with a follwing of large spectator is seen as a profitable business all around the world which also includes Bangladesh, but its not as bad in Bangladesh yet as it is in bigger nations. I hope that this result and the one by Ireland can extablish some kind of respect for smaller nations of cricket and also teach the players to be classy as well. It was quite visible that certain Indian players couldn't tolerate being bullied by Bangladeshi teenagers, such Munaf Patel, who had a verbal exchange with Tamim, who response to that took Zahir to the nearest laundromat by scoring 15 in one over and 50 from 53 balls. Harbhajan Singh showed how classless he is in essense when he tried to trip one of the Bangladeshi batsman by pullling his leg. I don't see India acting like that with the Aussies and South Africans, probably because Aussies and South Africans take India to the dryers day in and day out. India is a strong cricket team no doubt but not the best, they are still million miles away from the Aussies in cricketing terms. May be its time Indian players come down to earth and accept the fact that there are still teams that can school them day in day out without even making an effort, the name Aussies come to mind.

I think people are reading too much from a win or loss. Typical sub-continent mindset. Wait for a few more matches to come to this conclusion.
If you donot recall, the same SAF team that is now rated no.1 in one day cricket scored 86 the other day against India. let us not behave irrationally.
I think the reason India lost is because they treated the Bangladeshi team with a lot of respect. The fear in the batsmen's eyes was evident. The second thing is that for a score of 191 and a great start, the Bangladeshis scored 191 in 48.3 overs, too slow.
There are many things to learn and I am sure BD is and will indeed be a very good team. But donot let one match to inflate or deflate so many egos.

Hi Rezwan.
I find Athar Ali Khan to be a very nice and balanced commentator, but after your team climps up the charts (Which I know it will) you will have more retired players and some people better at English than at cricket posing as commentators. It happens to all countries and sure it will happen to you. Me and you will then have to withstand them and their opinions.
At those times Rezwan, I hope you do not expect us to believe that their views of Indian team or other cricketing things represent the views of Bangladesh people or players?
Your points 1 & 2 are based on views of people we Indians take with a pinch of salt (and in all fairness they too may have said it in jest rather than belief), and I know I need not remind you & Prothom Alo which influential teams backed your claim to Test status in 2000. A tour of Bangla to India just did not happen, in my opinion.
India were beaten plain and square by a better team, and no disrespect about your team was evident anywhere. In fact if you ask me one or two of your bowlers were accorded too much respect in the aftermath of your earlier Kiwi hunting expedition.

Saying that India lost because of disrespect is contradictory... it contradicts the Bangladeshi claims that they deserved to win because their players played really well. It sort of means "India disrespected Bangladesh. Otherwise, if India showed respect and played to their normal potential, they'd have won easily against a minnow like Bangladesh." That goes against Bangladeshi claims about the quality of their players.
But this was not a freak win by Bangladesh. It was a comprehensive win. Bangladesh have shown that they are a professional team... that they're as professional as any other team in cricket presently. It is said that the better team wins on the day. Clearly, Bangladesh were the better team yesterday, in fielding, batting and bowling. It was a win they truly deserved and achieved, not a mere snatch away win (from a disrespectful opposition.)

well chandra, you are wrong on different counts.
first, indians were not scared, if they were they would have played better. there were huge amount of complacency and unprofessionalism in their approach and they paid for it. they should have done their homework better, a team who defeated Nz only a few days ago, is no joke.
second, the batting was slow after the quick start but that was because sakib and mushfiq played very cautiously so that there was no more hiccups on way to the target.
you are right though in that one match shouldnt change many things and I hope our cricketers are aware of it and have their feet firmly grounded at the moment.

how will the perception of the commentators effect the performance of the cricketers in the west indies? Why cant Indians swallow the defeat of their team. If cricket is a game, so win and loose is the part of the game. Either we are asking that how can India loose to bangladesh or are we amazed at the performance of the Bangladeshi team. Second fact is being suppressed by the counciousness of the most of cricket lovers in this country.
Cricket is considered as a religion in this country. Do we really believe that there is any God in India? If yes, then why are so many people dying and so much of social and political chaos in this country. Then where is the god and so is religion? But still we believe that. Then why cant we believe that our cricketing Gods can fail? Sports debacle were always there in human history. Did India really deserved to win in 1983? Most of us will agree, but most, then would not have expected this.
Game is fair, lets have our spirits and reasons fair as well.

You are missing the point. Bouts of unprofessionalism by the Indian team are a periodic occurence, nothing to do with bangladesh. 15 years ago against a very weak SL team india scored 76. There is a kind of herd mentality in the team driven by absolute lack of confidence in pressure situations that often leads them to defeat.
Anyway Let us give it time, we will know who is right.

I do not believe what are being put in this blog. Any given day one team can beat another team. That is how cricket is. You do not resuffle ODI ranking after one game. Let India and BD play bunch more games and look at the result after that. The chance will come very soon (May, 2007). Right now india is a much better team than BD. The got beaten by a young inspired team and I am share the pride of their achievement. Their coach called it nicely. "This is just one win". So, I will ask all my fellow BD supporter to climb down and excercize some humility,

Its simple, had India taken the Bangladesh match seriously they could've had a higher total the one they had and who knows Dravid might've sent BD to bat first.
I would like my Indian fans to understand, we know our place in world cricket, we know we are not a power house of cricket, we are improving for sure, but Indian cricket is still miles ahead of us. But when was the last time India admitted that their blotted cricket ego is pretty hollow considering there are teams that has taken Indian cricket team to the dryers. All I am saying is a little integrity goes a long way. No doubt Indian cricket strong and at the moment India has one of the most feared batting line up. It is typical South Asian mentality yes but from whome?? We are not going around saying that we are gonna win the world cup. India brags all the time, we brag a little one day and it just pierces the Indian hearts. You are right, IT IS TYPICAL SOUTH ASIAN mentality. Why don't you guys go brag a little with the Aussies.

I know it was just one match but this match can act as confidence booster fot the boys of Bangladesh. Yeah I know media does hype everything in every country, but we are talking about India where all this hype comes to bite back in shape of people causing riots and attacking players' home. There is no justification in endangering players' families. It won't win anything for them.
As far as Bangladeshi cricket team goes, well, we know it was just one match and India is still a better a team than us and that's why it makes it so special. We have beaten a better team. We don't celebrate when we beat Scotland or Bermuda by 250 runs or more. Where is the fun and accomplishment in that. I'll be honest, as for me I have no problem with Aussies being arrogant, because they clearly back it up, there are the defending world champions and they are still (despite the hickups) the world beaters. But Indian cricketers don't really any reason for that. Like I said before we like Indians, in fact believe it or not there are tons kids BD who idolize Sachin, Dravid and co. But yes when they turn us in to a laughing stock rather actually encouraging a young cricketing nation flourish we have a problem. If you look more closely Indian cricket community act just like English Sahibs. But then again it is a problem with the world cricket community as well.

Three incorrect facts
a. Bragging- I have not seen a single post here bragging about India. Second, there were many including Dravid who expressed concern before the BD match.
b. All BD arguments have so far not been about how well your players played. It is all about the 'arrogance' of the Indian team. The whole notion of Indian players being arrogant is untrue. Careless, absolutely!!!!
c. "when they turn us in to a laughing stock"
back this up!!!!

Chandra listen man, We know that it will take atleast 2 or more years to even come close to evel of cricketing history. But We the Bengalis who are proud of whenever our team brings us joy. My point is this when India came to Bangladesh for tournaments not including Bangladesh. We still have a full house for whatever matches it is. I follow Bangladesh Cricket and in my observation India Cricket Board (BCCI) and your media corporations has basically has shown nothing but disrespect to our board and to our country. Let me give you a good example, During the Indias tour to Bangladesh, The BCCI sent a security team to investigate if our country is safe. Ofcourse it is sure sometime we have political problems same like your country. Second I believe the tour was covered by ESPN and I remember that after Ashraful scored that 158, when they were showing advertisement for the ODI series, they only mentioned how India destroy BD in the test series and how they are going to detroy us in the ODI series. Listen I have the greatest respect for all your legends and their achievement. My only demand for your country and your board is that show us respect that we show to your team and don't treat us like we're outsiders of the test cricket areana. I wish all the best for the Indian Team and I do hope that in the 2011 Asian Cricket World Cup all of us can show the world that our ASIAN CRICKET CULTURE is the greatest. My dream for the 2011 World Cup is to have a all Asian Semi-Finals and Finals.

Chandra, suck it up Indian Cricket is just an average quality of cricket.
Of course there is no arrogance from Indian Cricket, That's a load of BULL. There is always arrogance from Indian cricket board and team, with the smaller teams. They don't show any arrogance against the bigger teams though. Is the Indian team over rated absolutely. Are they better than the BD team at the moment, YES!! But India is not and I REPEAT NOT a powerhouse of cricket. They may think they are because India only wins when the games are in the sub-continent and majority of those wins are on Indian soil most times. When they go elsewhere they are just an average team. Indian Cricket team is just an average and in best case above average Cricket team.
I don't see you Harbajan Singh trying to grab onto an Aussie players leg when he is running or Munaf running his mouth them, because they don't just treat Indian Cricket like MINNOWS but they prove it too. And that's also on Indian soil. MAY BE YOU SHOULD GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT. Or are you also living under the impression that since BD people are from a smaller nation they can never be right and Indians are always right.
As far as respect goes, honestly I don't think as a Bangladeshi I care about BCCI's respect anymore. The fact is on the biggest stage of cricket India LOST and yes LOST convincingly to Bangladesh so you can play million one days against us and trash us but when it mattered we gave you a lesson on CRICKET 101 which most of the world that watches cricket witnessed and that's what they will talk about at least for 4 years. So, learn to live with that. The truth must hurt.

Matt: I follow Bangladesh Cricket and in my observation India Cricket Board (BCCI) and your media corporations has basically has shown nothing but disrespect to our board and to our country
Chandra: What is your basis of this statement? We were the ones who have been supporting your recognition as a test team. Sourav and Dravid have always been supporting the so called "minnows" presence in world cricket. 70% of ICC's funds are generated by your so called "bad" Indian sponsors and much of it is given to the so called "minnows". The whole argument is we have not visited you since 3 years. Sorry, we have not visited Australia too since 3 years, so what? Just to remind you, our next overseas tour is in fact to Bangladesh.
Matt: The BCCI sent a security team to investigate if our country is safe
Chandra: The BCCI team sends its security team to all countries. We sent 15 of our top commandos to West indies. So what?
Matt: Second I believe the tour was covered by ESPN and I remember that after Ashraful scored that 158, when they were showing advertisement for the ODI series, they only mentioned how India destroy BD in the test series and how they are going to detroy us in the ODI series.
Chandra: I saw that series too. I dont think ESPN team ever mentioned this. If you think they did, please back it up with some link of that period.
Matt: Listen I have the greatest respect for all your legends and their achievement.
Chandra: Good, atleast somebody has respect fro our "legends". As far as we are concerned our respect for SRT/RD/AK/SCG is over. They can move over for younger players.
Matt: My only demand for your country and your board is that show us respect that we show to your team and don't treat us like we're outsiders of the test cricket areana

Ashiq: suck it up Indian Cricket is just an average quality of cricket
Chandra: To be pronounce that on the basis of two world cup matches is kind of premature. But now that we have not made it to the super-8 you have all the bragging rights. Secondly, there is a difference between the Indian team and Indian cricket. Therefore your conclusion is kind of flawed and premature.
Ashiq: Of course there is no arrogance from Indian Cricket, That's a load of BULL. There is always arrogance from Indian cricket board and team, with the smaller teams
Chandra: Can you give me evidence of this? You cannot make a random comment. Back it up with the facts.
Ashiq: But India is not and I REPEAT NOT a powerhouse of cricket. They may think they are because India only wins when the games are in the sub-continent and majority of those wins are on Indian soil most times. When they go elsewhere they are just an average team. Indian Cricket team is just an average and in best case above average Cricket team
Chandra: Can you show me if anybody here or anybody elsewhere in media or otherwise ever claimed that we are a powerhouse. Show me some data to back up this claim.
Secondly, the same Indian team that lost in the first round had 8 players who played in the last world cup final and yes, were the only team to hold Australia to a draw in Australa in 2005. Sorry mate....
Ashiq: I don't see you Harbajan Singh trying to grab onto an Aussie players leg when he is running or Munaf running his mouth them, because they don't just treat Indian Cricket like MINNOWS but they prove it too
Chandra: Obviously you dont want watch Indian cricket. :-). We do. I dont approve of their behavior but this is the normal conduct of some of our players these days. Harbhajan has been fined multiple times for such conduct. Here is an example of something like this against South Africa
http://www.hindu.com/2005/11/17/stories/2005111709202100.htm
here is an youtube video of what sreesanth did with Andre Nel
http://youtube.com/watch?v=tGJYwz5Ovlc
So stop wondering if this is something that they did because the team on the other side was Bangladesh and that b. We cannot do it with white skins.
Here is another link with our great fracas with australia
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/in_depth/2001/india_v_australia/1255951.stm
Lastly, why didn't you write anything about Jayasuriya hitting rasel with this elbow? Obviously not, you are prejudiced against India, that is why
Matt: Or are you also living under the impression that since BD people are from a smaller nation they can never be right and Indians are always right
Chandra: Sorry mate. The problem with all our neighbours is you dont understand India. You need to start with that. Whenever I go to BD I sense a deep sense of inferiority with respect to Indians that I have never understood. Dhaka has always been a favorite city and the people are the finest but the inferiority complex that exists with some Bangladeshis is incredible. Mostly we Indians are not bothered about our neighbours (and that is definitely a problem) and hence the cool relations with your country and our recent non-involvement with the Lankans.
Ashiq: As far as respect goes, honestly I don't think as a Bangladeshi I care about BCCI's respect anymore. The truth must hurt
Chandra: Its your problem mate, not ours. Don't forget you beat Pakistan in 1999 and yes in a world cup. None of you did a lot of hoo haw then. Is it because Pakistan is a muslim country? I think so.....Finally this is not about cricket for you ....your grouse is about we being a bigger country and you a smaller....cannot help your mental blocks mate.......Nobody can help you deal with that complex.......As far as we are concerned...we have 8 Bangladesh's within our country and two Bangladesh's who dont get food to eat...we have enough problems to worry about ourselves....your nation is way down the priority matrix.....sorry mate........
As far as our cricket is concerned....we lost to Zimbabwe in the 1999 world cup and were out in the super-6 finishing at the bottom......we were in the 2003 final :-)!!!! Thank you so much for your "kind" feedback about our cricket and country....

If tat is not done, then expect another sorry 2011 World cup.
