Harold,

My sincere apologies for screwing up your name. I need to limit my open windows to the operating capacity of my brain. That would be one.

Again, very sorry.

Ciao, Guido

BD,

Good piece. I would reiterate Ayan Roy's ideas about exercise. I don't keep up with the research, but I know how irritable and sluggish I become after missing a few days of aerobics. Of course the same is true 20 minutes after slamming down a Whopper.

I overhear my wife and mother-in-law saying pretty much the same thing about Italians. People ARE getting "bigger". Is it politically correct to call someone fat? I don't know what the hell to say anymore.

I read a book called "Fast Food Nation" by Eric Schlosser some years ago. It not only spoke in-depth about health issues, but also offered a candid view inside the industry. Everything from French-fry potato barons in Idaho, to the slaughter houses in Texas. The book is a bit dated, but still very applicable. Maybe even more so now.

Ciao, Guido

erm, ledzius, your knowledge of medicine is astoundingly bad. more likely these athletes got ill due to hereditary reasons rather than from coke and a couple hot dogs.

the fact is that a sensible diet is what is recommended, and a couple sodas here and there is not going to make you obese or give you cancer. the problem is that some people have no sense, do not know what a starch is, a carbohydrate, a protein... cannot cook to save their lives and don't have enough time to do anything but get take away food.

it is sad that people are becoming more and more obese, this we can all agree on.

Indian quick service restaurant chain Nirula's has recently partnered with an American weight management company to develop a healthier range of fast food options for kids. Nirula's has developed a microsite populated with the nutritional values of its new healthy range but also a featured section with educational games and quizzes on nutrition targeted at kids. The message - encourage kids to 'eat healthy' and 'play healthy'. It is an initiative undertaken by Nirulas to educate kids on healthy eating habits by using online games.
The link to the microsite is below:

Ayan Roy- "If you want to burn fried chicken, burgers, coke and hot dogs, you should be running around ALL day, playing basketball, baseball, football - and doing things like skateboarding, climbing trees, swimming and what not."

It is very reductionist to look at junk food only in terms of calories. The fact is, even if you manage to burn off the extra calories, these foods are bad for health due to presence of toxins and other cancer causing chemicals.

This is one reason why in the US you would find really fit athletes getting cancer at an early age (like Lance Armstrong or Scott Hamilton).

It is best to avoid foods like hot dogs and sodas, irrespective of your weight.

A few weeks back there was an open house in my kids school. I saw quite a few obese kids who were no more than five or six. There was an obese three year old competing with her mommy's size.

Love does not translate to food especially junk food. But Indians have a weird mentality. Some parents give milk mixed with coke to their kids and give candy and sweets daily.

There was a kid in my class back when I was teaching who would eat nothing except junk food. Her eating habits were so bad that she had to be admitted in the hospital due to undernourishment. Obviously her eating habits needed to be changed and I had a tough time getting her to eat her regular tiffin during breaktime. She was only three and a half.

I wanted to give the parents an earful but they were already suffering for the mistake they had made with their kid's nutrition in the name of love and pampering.

Even though diet is important, high intensity exercise is also extremely important, and is a point which should be stressed more in my opinion.

Regular high intensiry exercise can help you burn the extra fat and calories you consume with tasty food.
For young kids, exercise, especially sports, is very important as it leads to bone and muscular development, aids in cardiovascular improvement, and also improves intelligence and helps in social bonding.

If a sruvey is conducted about the American fat kids' exercise habits, it will be found out that most of the obsese kids are couch potatoes and video game addicts.

If you want to burn fried chicken, burgers, coke and hot dogs, you should be running around ALL day, playing basketball, baseball, football - and doing things like skateboarding, climbing trees, swimming and what not.
Americans are blessed with excellent school and neighborhood sporting facilities and huge backyards, fields and parks. They should not complain about lack of opportunities for exercise and sports.

Coming back to food, what's important is to have a Balanced Diet. Occasional coke, greasy meat and fries should be okay and allowed. But it should also be supplemented with plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grians, to complete the qouta of necessary vitamins and minerals needed for good growth, immunity and body functioning.
