On Sunday mornings I used to surf channels for "Evangelist" comedy show, and I used to thoroughly enjoy it for the comedy miracles in the show. However I was surprised to witness a special prayer show in a Tamil Channel owned by "Star" group.

I was aghast seeing it. Evangelists were praying for a secular and financially accountable Governments in the six states recently gone for election and the results were awaited on the Monday 8th Dec.

Paradoxically, the organisation run by a well known evangelist family which has conducted the program, has amassed huge wealth in and around Coimbatore, with very little financial accountability.

That's the Media in India.

it's best not to use brains when confronted with a "fucking problem". or is it the other way around? I'm confused, as usual.

Pitfalls of citizen power
Chandan Mitra

"Our politicians may have much to answer for. But that does not mean democracy can do without politicians. And those who champion the idea that citizen power can be a substitute for elected Government should realise that the logical extension of that argument is abolition of democracy itself. "Citizen-power" to replace political power -- a fashionable cause extolled by sections of the media -- amounts to advocacy of dictatorship of the elite"

It is very clear in India Today the the English Language Media is a total failure. They do not work for India. They do not have the interests of India in their minds. They are not Indian at all. They all wish they were westerners and behave that way.

The media structure in India must one day be dismantled. I look forward to a day when there will be no times of india, no indian express, no NDTV and no CNN IBN. The sooner this can happen, the better it will be for India.

Do people still watch what's on the idiot box? If so, then an option is to turn it off and head outside for a walk, or a gup-shup with a neighbor.

There is no problem with Indian Media or MSM.

The fucking problem is with Indian people, especially intellectuals who do not want to use their brains.

The people are incapable of thinking anything beyond what media feeds them. So, media continues with non-sense. Sometimes, I call TV channels and blast them on phone if I see them doing any non-sense. Once phone lines get busy with people shouting, they will mend.

If people have no brains and no social responsibility, then why blame media?

People can always take up social issues and make a difference without reacting to any emergency.

If people want, they are capable of doing every possible miracle in the country including stopping terrorism. However, every Indian thinks himself or herself to be powerless human being dependent on media, police, NSG and Govt.

"concept of lighting candles is foreign to us"

Imported Sonia has tried to pack as many foreign rituals as possible in last 5 years. Her entry in politics has seen his political devotees bend over backward to make her feel at home. When I was growing up, b'day caking was confined to Bolywood movies and I never saw that ritual in real life around me. Back than, I did not see xmas or new year celebrated either. Santa, who? Never had seen or known him until I came to America. I guess he came with mall culture. What about Valentine? I had never heard of it or seen celebrated in India until last few years. I think Bollywood is the main conduit to introduce these western rituals and they take off as latest fads. Have you noticed the movies lately? The temple scenes are out, and church scenes are in, even when characters and families look Hindu. They would show temple only if terrible happening is to be shown.

Trust me, when you were a kid, there were fewer of what you call "Western" practices. Then more folks like you started migrating to the US, even worked there as Teaching Assistants...or chased the greenback...change happens and there's nothing you can do about it. You might label it as "Western" and feel self-righteous, but you may wish to look yourself in the mirror to try to figure out exactly what it is that makes you "Eastern" or whatever label you may wish to use. Change happens; get used to it.

Lighting candles allows ordinary folks to show solidarity. Its a feel good thing - like people putting ribbons on trees and cars to show support for troops. It means nothing, but it shows whole nation is behind that whatever.

What's this stupid thing about candlelight vigils anyway?

When I was a kid, there was no such concept as lighting candles after a tragedy. Then some people here started copying Western practices. In India, we have lights for auspicious occasions. Certainly the concept of lighting candles is foreign to us. I also fail to understand the purpose. Are terrorists and ISI officers supposed to undergo a change of heart once they see a swarm of flames? Me thinks not.

A correction.. Candle lights were not really foisted on us by the electronic media. This credit should go to another group which includes folks like Kuldeep Nayyar. Even when Kaluchak kids were being hacked by terrorists these worthies went to Wagha Border to light candles..
