Rape of a Catholic Nun - A Shocking Incident in Orissa

October 04, 2008
Rajen Nair

The shocking incident of rape of a 29 year old Catholic nun allegedly by a Hindu fanatical group in the sectarian violence in Orissa has made every patriotic Indian hang their head in utter shame. Ironically this dreadful news comes just a day after the nation celebrated Gandhi Jayanthi, the preacher of non-violence and tolerance to all faiths. Whenever there is sectarian or communal outbreak in the country unfortunately, it is the women folk who have to bear the maximum brunt of mindless violence, often becoming victims of rape and killing. It has happened before like in the Gujarat communal riots and it would continue to occur, sadly in future.

The reaction that follows after such an incident is that there would be huge hue and cry in the media, the NGOs resort to filing petitions, the politicians besides offering lip service, at times politicize the whole incident and the common person would remain mute spectators. After a lapse of time, everything gets forgotten till the country is jolted with one more such incident of rape and communal violence. Seldom does the incident of rape come to light in our country, though in this case it came out 38 days later, because the police in connivance with the politicians do their best to suppress such incidents.

The Hindu fanatical groups like Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Sangh Parivar have let loose a reign of terror in BJP-ruled States, destroying churches, killing innocent people and raping women. What would happen in the event of the BJP coming to power in the country? People like Pravin Tagodia would have a free run spreading hatred and inciting sectarian and communal riots. The recent communal attacks on the Christian community by the outfits like Bajrang Dal clearly exposes the hidden ( one can no more say hidden as it is out in the open) agenda of Hindutva, that is to make India a Hindu nation in which only the voice of the brute majority of the Hindus would prevail in the society.

The Muslims and Christian  minorities, if they don’t adhere or indigenize their faith to Hindutva Brand of doctrine, they would be bullied and punished. In short the minorities would be treated like second class citizens. The Sangh Parivar would not fall short of realizing its goal of Hindutva even if the country is under siege by spate of bomb blasts allegedly triggered by the Indian Mujahideen. The Hindutva brigade, Bajrang Dal and VHP, who were instrumental in Babri Masjid fall, has once again raised its ugly head to destroy the secular fabric of our multi-ethnic and multi-religious society. The BJP by remaining silent to the Christian atrocities is only playing the Hindu card for electorate gains. That is what they are doing right now in Orissa and Karnataka of polarizing the society on communal lines.

The Bajrang Dal and VHP are no different from the SIMI and Indian Mujahideen terrorist organizations - both aim to terrorize the society. The former goes about its business by destroying churches and killing Christians and the latter plant bombs that kills innocent victims. It is time that the Centre intervenes to stop this carnage against the Christians.

The nation is reeling under home grown terrorist acts, in part, thanks to demolition of Babri Masjid, Mumbai and Gujarat riots, the last thing the country wants is for some misguided boys from the Christian community taking up arms. So it calls for stringent action by the central government of arresting the Bajrang dal and VHP goons under non-bailable warrant and then convicting them by having fast track courts. Yet if that does not deter arsonist from indulging in further violence then the government may ban Bajrang Dal.

I think Hindu groups are doing a fantastic job in Orissa and should be provided more funds to deal with the missionary threat. In orissa we have been putting up with missionary land grab and goond gardi for nearly 40 years, it is time to strike back and teach them a good lesson.

Also, the centre must actively considered a law preventing missionaries of all religions (Hindu/Christian/Muslim) operating in the country. They are the biggest threat to the nation's unity. Additionally, all foreign funding of religious places must stop immediately. Last but not the least, missionaries (of any religion) must be eliminated from operating educational institutions. They have no business to be doing that.

I donot think that we Hindus are anymore afraid of christian boys or muslim boys taking up guns. Considering the fact that both groups are a small proportion of the population, regular folks from these religions should be more worried. So, let us keep these threats aside. Lunatics will always find reasons to plant bombs for no reason - Gujarat or no Gujarat. I recall the late 90s in Delhi when used to have blasts on a regular basis. No Gujarat at that time.

Where is the introspection amongst christians about what their nut case missionaries are doing in the country side? Why are missioonaries claiming that their religion is superior to Hindusim? Why are they claiming that Hinduism is a useless religion etc etc.

Rape allegations are cheap propaganda stunts. It is so easy to make allegations as no burden of proof is required, especially when alleged women have died in the conflicts. When stakes are so high, there is no shortage of people willing to lie, make allegations, give false testimonies for propagandists to run with sensational head lines. In the past, accusations of rape of nuns have turned out to be mostly local incidents involving xians themselves. Often when their secret sexual escapades get outed, allegations of rape by some hindu miscreant become staple of their damage control.

"The Hindu fanatical groups like Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Sangh Parivar have let loose a reign of terror in BJP-ruled States, destroying churches, killing innocent people and raping women. What would happen in the event of the BJP coming to power in the country?"

Just like Jehadi terrorists are targetting BJP-ruled states, Could it be that missionary crusaders are targetting BJP-ruled states for creating confrontations with Hindus for political motives?

Have xians become Sonia's grass-root gang doing her party work of uniting xians around the world for empowering her for upcoming election?

Have missionaries become sonia's personal lobby doing her work of uniting minorities and political base so that BJP can not come to power at the enter? Perhaps act as agent provocature to create excuses for the center to undo the elected state governments run by BJP?

In Karnataka, the congress activists and jehadis were alleged to be involved in arson and vandalism with the fond hope that resulting confrontations, protests, law and order issues would be used as an excuse by the Sonia to dismiss BJP government in Karnataka. Nice try.

Second attempt at leaving a comment:

I had written a long-ish comment but will just mention two links and stop at that..

I should emphasise that the incident of rape must be thoroughly investigated and that there can never be any justification for killing of innocents.

Two links which give a more complete picture:

I said to this to your pseudo secular pal Madhu and I say this to you as well...STOP your divide and rule policy in India. Your dirty games are over....

What do you have to say when "teenage girls are buried alive in Pakistan" in the name of religion. Why don't the shitty missionaries go there to do conversions and make people embrace Christianity?

Rajan, India is part of this world and having said that Hindu minorities in the world are in great danger from Islamic terrorism and fanatic Christians who have come here with their dirty mission.

The so-called nun is a Qafir and if she was raped...she put herself in that situation. If the Pope thinks he can send his keeps to India and hide behind the weaker sex...he has to think of something else. He can send them to the middle-east. How does that sound?

The French president Nicolas Sarkozy, recently said to Manmohan Singh "We respect Sikh customs and traditions and they are welcome in France. But we have rules regarding the neutrality of civil servants; regarding secularism and those apply not just to Sikhs or Muslims but to all. They are non-discriminatory. So while we respect the customs of Sikhs, we expect them to respect the rules of the Republic," Sarkozy asserted. "

What Nicolas said and does..that is secularism. Is that understood to you? You follow the Secular rule of the land. Period.

No more temples in Ayodhya will be brought down by Barber and his clan. No more honor killings and no more conversions. If the center govt will not pay heed to this, then people /citizens of India will have to do something about this.

The atrocities on Christians now is hyped and a bunch of lies. This is a strategy of Sonia and her side kicks to gain sympathy votes and come in the public eye and weaken whose states ( Karnataka) where she does not have any political standing. Her dirty job is exposed.

I think the owner of the website is doing a great job by letting these pusedo secular post such articles, the more they post, the better. Directly and indirectly they expose their own puedo secular mindsets, thoughts and real intentions. Readers in India should know the true face of people like Rajan, Madhu etc who divide and rule and create more communal tension.

In India, Muslims and Christians were given special and royal treatment. They are allowed to encourage conversions and practice their own religions with utmost freedom. This will not happen anymore.

A rule is a rule in other countries which is respected and followed by all. But in India in the name of "secularism, appeasing and minority" we abuse our freedom, bend backwards and spread more communal distort. Pseudo- secularists -like the author himself are hugely responsible for this communal disarray.

If you and your pals will not practice secularism ,then be ready for the outcome and consequences. Let people live in their religion peacefully and practice it harmoniously.

Then our ex Prime Minister Atalji would take another bus to our neighbor Pakistan and open the doors of friendship and harmony and even write more beautiful poems.

---which you gandhi's and sonias could not do in 50 years of post independence and nor in the past 3 years.

The prolem with you guys is that you all want communal divide and tension..thats how you all rake in the vote banks and enjoy.

"hindu groups" raped a nun?
this is how you put in words an allegation which has not been investigated/substantiated?

fanatic christians have damaged this country's reputation, not the hindu "extremist" groups, as you claim.

Indians dont need to hang their heads in shame because a woman was raped. national shame occurs when thousands of black people are lynched by christians. national shame occurs when millions of jews are terminated in holocaust by christians.

may be you should direct your hate propoganda towards those christian crimes.

The Congress party has through the incidents in Orissa very clearly shown where its preferences are. We will see how many seats they will win in Orissa in the next assembly election :-). Naveen babu is doing a fantastic job with nearly a million oriyas moving out of poverty during the last 8 years (world bank report). His modern outlook, perseverance and non-sentimental outlook is a big asset to the state of orissa.
Lastly, I recall Mr. Shivraj Patil did not win his seat in Maharashtra. Mr. Patil, forget about contesting in 2009, you will not even win half the votes you won in 2004.

BTW when did TOI become a centre of anti-Hindu rants? It appears that only the Daily Pioneer remains a representative of fair reporting on hindu issues.

""We ordered death penalty for Swami Laxmananand. He was the main member of Vishwa Hindu Parishad. They used non-tribal traders' money to build Bajrang Dal and ran propaganda against Christians. They falsely accused Christians of killing cows and of conversions. This forced us to attack him," said Sabyasachi Panda, secretary, Orissa state committee of Maoists."

Considering that xians were involved in threatening and attacking Swami in the past, how credible is this Maoist outfit, expecially when it uses defending xians as a justification for murdering swami. I suspect that missionaries might be sponsoring the maoist insurgencies by making common cause with the maoist - or maoist must have have aligned with missionaries as a way to topple the government. A terrorist outfit acquiring powers to topple state governments must have been beyond wildest expectations including the maoists themselves. Under congress, everything is possible - if maoist aided by UPA could topple a hindu kingdom in Nepal, than Orissa and Karnataka are but small fries compared to Nepal.

So you dont beleive that maoists killed swami.

>>A terrorist outfit acquiring powers to topple state governments must have been beyond wildest expectations including the maoists themselves.

wait, wait, the maoists want to topple the government and hence killed swami. They also got together with congis to engineer these so called riots etc articles in the media. The whole plan was to topple the government of orrisa by maoists along with missionaries along with congis. Damm it, you forgot to include ISI, CIA, OBL, Saddam from the grave, the Pope and George Bush.

>>Under congress, everything is possible -
In your imagination, everything is possible.

>>if maoist aided by UPA could topple a hindu kingdom in Nepal,

???

>>than Orissa and Karnataka are but small fries compared to Nepal.

So UPA would topple and undermine their own government so that maoists might lord over orissa and karnataka, which by the way undermines their own power. These congis, i tell you, are very suicidial (against hindu dharma, by the way).

"So you dont beleive that maoists killed swami"

Swami was hated by xians. He was attacked and threatend by xians in past. He had to maintain police body guards because of death threats received from xians. He and maoists had no previous record of animocity. Maoist leader himself is justifying the murder in defence of xians and not any maoist cause. Tribals who are rioting in response do not believe maoists did it.

"wait, wait, the maoists want to topple the government and hence killed swami. They also got together with congis to engineer these so called riots etc articles in the media. The whole plan was to topple the government of orrisa by maoists along with missionaries along with congis. Damm it"

It is not implausible to provoke communal confrontations for political motives. Missionaries and maoists are leftist votebanks and BJP is their mortal enemy. When you murder a swami who has a large local following, the reaction and counter reaction from both sides can be on predictable lines and congress would get its predictable excuse to topple an elected govt on communal and law order grounds. All that congress votebanks have to do is to continue the provocative postures and protests and poisonous propaganda to draw their counterparts in a protracted communal confrontation. That way, congress, with the help of its votebanks get to overthrow BJP governments on the cheap. It beats the tedious route of winning elections on issues and defeating BJP at the ballot box.

"So UPA would topple and undermine their own government so that maoists might lord over orissa and karnataka,"

How would UPA undermine their own government when it gets to topple BJP governments on the cheaps on the pretext of law and order? All that UPA's votebanks have to do is to continue to draw hindus into communal confrontations and trigger hindu backlash, so UPA and its media henchmen can step in to take care of the rest. Missionaries have shown a way out to desperate congress who has been relying on jehadi terrorism to terrorize BJP ruled states and draw out communal backlash from hindus, but none had been forthcoming, but rather terrorism was strengthening BJP by giving it a handy issue of terrorism to beat up on congress. So now missionaries can draw out communal backlash from Hindus and congress can get to topple BJP governments as well as beat up on BJP with moral self-righteousness - a winning formula. Sonia can count on her xian friends to help her in times of her political needs.

And what does Kerty have to say about the woman who was gang raped and burned when she was mistaken to be a Christian by the Hindu crowd?

Obviously the likes of Kerty who support the murderous RSS would believe Gandhi abused instead of taking God's name before he died.

Bajrang Dal like SIMI should be banned. Any organization that disturbs the peace and harmony of the country should be taken to task.

Poverty is the biggest crime in India not conversion. Conversion should be a matter of choice and whether you like it or not Kerty it wasn't a christian who killed the so called swami but a Moaist.

Crimes were committed against the citizens of this country, stop playing the religious card to excuse criminal behavior.

Violence is never seen as a legitimate means of protest in a civilized society.

If BJP breaks its ties with RSS and VHP it would be the ideal political party for this country. Until then we would have to put up with the Gandhi clan.

Religion does not feed the belly, money does.

If you think the Hindu numbers are dwindling then get some mega PR corporations to give you people some pointers on public relations and marketing. Do it well enough and you can have large numbers of Hindus missions mushrooming all over the country.

Get all the Hindutva NRIs come to these remote villages and help build schools, temples and pay for building free Hindu hospitals.

Get galvanized and get one of those tv self realized gurus to go give lectures at a Dalit village, eat with them and live with them.

Some how I don't see any of those brahmanical gurus doing that do you?

The view expressed by Bihari is saner and moderate which is in sync with the common men of India. Majority of the Hindus are secular in nature because tolerance to other faith and to follow the path of peace is the hallmark of Hinduism.

Maoist outfit is trying to shift the blame away from missionaries and create alibi for missionaries. Just as Lallu had tried to shift the blame away from jehadis for Godhara Holocaust by declaring it an accident. The game is so transparant, nobody buys it.

I think congress has ace-card here in Maoists if congress can have it claim responsibility for terrorist events that can help congress spare its votebanks from blame and backlash - that way congress can promote terrorism, appease the jehadis and missionaries and still avoid the political baggage of being soft on terrorism, but in fact get to pounce on BJP and its Hindutva pariwar.

As usual, facts on the ground are always different than what is projected in propaganda. Xians are projected as victims but they too are engaged in acts of violence and vandalism, and equal party in continued communal clashes. Here is what Swapan Dasgupta wrote:

"Those familiar with Kandhamal district will vouch for two things. First, that the area is thickly forested and poorly connected. Second, that even before the recent troubles, there was simmering tension between the tribal Kandhas, who profess their indigenous faith, and the Scheduled Caste Panos, many of whom have converted to Christianity. The conflict, often articulated in terms of Hindu-Christian conflict, was primarily over meagre state handouts. The Kandhas who had resisted the encroachments of colonial administration and missionaries were resentful of the resourcefulness of neighbouring Christian communities. The Panos, on the other hand, felt that they couldn't take full advantage of the State's affirmative action as long as they were classified as a Scheduled Caste. They wanted to be reclassified as Scheduled Tribe, a demand that brought them in conflict with the Kandhas.

The tensions were apparent when I visited the area with Naveen Patnaik during the 1999 election. At that time, local BJD workers complained bitterly about land-grab by the churches. A particular cause of resentment was the ability of the various Christian denominations to buy land along the main roads and build places of worship. Christian schools were also perceived to be giving an unfair advantage to those who had moved away from traditional mores. In the context of India Inc these grievances may appear churlish. After all, why should a community wilfully deny itself opportunities for upward social mobility -- even if it means disentanglement from the past? Yet, as we well know from Singur, Nandigram and Kalinga Nagar, the lure of modernisation isn't always uniformly enchanting. Subaltern classes often have an ethical code that defies market forces.

It was this code and a curious sense of right and wrong that came to the fore in the aftermath of the brutal murder of 80-year-old Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and four members of his ashram on August 23. Regardless of whether or not the armed assassins were Maoists, the perception on the ground was that he had been eliminated by fanatical Christians opposed to his anti-conversion and anti-cow slaughter drives. The Swami, who had established his ashram in Kandhamal in 1966, was deeply venerated as an incarnation of Parashuram by the Kandhas. The anger over his death fuelled a clash between communities which, quite predictably, translated into sectarian conflict. In the ensuing violence that has led to some 35 deaths, the better-off Panos have been the worst affected."

Catholic Nun, Hindu Swami and the Politics of Identity - By Saurav Basu

(sorry, I only have the article but not the link)

The rape of a Catholic Nun in Kandhmal by suspected Kandh tribals has intensified the Congress-led UPA government's fascist intention to dismiss the popularly elected, two term chief minister Naveen Patnaik heading the BJD-BJP coalition, hypocritically disowning their own legacy of failure under Congress Chief Minister JB Patnaik when Graham Staines was burnt to death by Dara Singh, a lone tribal ranger.

Big font headlines in English dailies over an event which considering the explosive situation prevailing in the Kandhamal district, barely two days after the popular Hindu Swami Laxmananda's Saraswati's murder, seems intriguing especially since the latter's brutal murder along with 4 other Ashram inmates including a woman and a child were shunted to page 10 by the same. Not satisfied with that, they accepted with alacrity the supposedly Maoist appropriation of the crime, even when this claim of a Maoist group had been rejected by their own peers [1] , who are known to be in cohorts with Christian evangelists.
In India every day over 18 women are raped -- but their sordid stories rarely if ever make headlines. However, in this case, the vested interests in the media found an opportunity to twist a case of human suffering to fit their own communal agenda. Even before ascertaining the facts of the case, they started a campaign of using this one-off incident to foster their goal of demonizing anything that is Hindu. To anyone who has been following the incidents in Orissa, it would be absolutely clear that these very same groups in the media have, from the very beginning,
presented a totally distorted picture of the actual nature of the conflict in the state. They have used every trick out of their propaganda manual to try to paint the conflict in such a way as to support their own nefarious thesis.

In Orissa, for decades, there has been simmering tensions between the Kandh tribals and the Panis -- the latter having allied with the missionaries have persistently persecuted the former and frequently been party to land grabs. A lot of this forcibly appropriated land has been used for constructing illegal churches which serve as houses of conversion. The fact is that the Panis are not even tribals, but they strive to demote their caste status from SC to ST in order to conveniently usurp the very meager state doles, meant for the Kandhas in a district where 78% of the population resides below the poverty line. Even the Statesman, known for this socialist viewpoint, has in an editorial [2] admitted the deep rooted tribal disaffection representing the ethnic aspect of the subaltern strife which cannot be reduced to the terms of the recent pattern of VHP-Christian confrontation. This internecine struggle between two indigenous communities on
considerations of caste and reservation has been further accentuated by the Christian evangelist propaganda and consequent exploitation of the situation.

The yet unknown culprits have also been explicitly
identified as "Hindu fanatics" by the very same media which dogmatically dithers from denigrating terror bombers as "Muslim fundamentalists" and instead prefers to use politically loaded terms like misguided Islamic militants or sometimes even 'misguided youth'! Not surprisingly, these Hindu fanatics will discover no guardian angels in the English language mouthpieces unlike the SIMI which has Tehelka and a host of other sympathizers in human right forums, academic circles and political parties. M C Sharma has now been declared to have been killed in a fake encounter/friendly fire by M J Akbar, the Hindustan times, Muslim fact finding teams [3] and Mushirul Hasan Vice Chancellor and "JNU recognized secular historian" of the Jamia Milia Islamia. But it is certain that no Hindu
activist, group or leader will allege the rape to be a fake or consensual; such conspiracy theories have no place within the domains of a genuine "Hindu mindset" despite the fact that in the infamous Jhabua rape case in 1999, six of the twelve accused in question who had been prematurely identified as Hinduvta activists by the "secular brigade" turned out to be tribal converts to Christianity. Of course, the 'secular' media ran away after telling such a massive lie, when the truth was revealed [4]. No apology was forthcoming.

The confabulating Catholics will vehemently deny the tribals a place in the Hindu religious fold in order to facilitate their conversion strategies. They are animists they say, ironically the very cult Romila Thapar reserved for the Vedic Aryans in her VI class NCERT textbook. However, the same Catholics in alliance with the "secularists" now claim Hindus to be responsible for this dastardly drama -- the accused tribals in question have now
been conveniently elevated to the status of "caste" hindus. Perhaps, we are also ignoring that in most Indian tribals, the ideology of rape is minimal, if not non-existent. All in all, how can tribals who are only semi Hinduized although attuned to several naturalistic Hindu practices,
be considered as representative of the Hindu right is beyond the comprehension of the rational mind.

The perversions of the Times View (4th October) is explicit in their illegitimate improvisation where they have the audacity to declare discovering no difference between the acts of terrorist bombings in Delhi, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and that of the rape in question. It is preposterous to suggest that that an isolated solitary rape case in a remote and inaccessible region and in a highly charged atmosphere caused by the brutal murder of a popular religious icon is the same as pre-planned conspiracy to destroy the nation by Islamic fundamentalists, guided by an inhuman and barbaric
ideology. The propagation of such patently false ideas is not only a great disrespect to the thousands of victims killed and maimed in terror attacks but also exposes the moral vacuity and the vicious agenda of a section of India's fourth estate.

Moreover, it is becoming increasingly apparent that sections of the "secular" media have their own doctrinal axis to grind, which includes distortion and suppression of news involving Christian atrocities on Hindus in Kandhamal.
For instance, on the 26th of September, CNN.com, the leading American news channel reported a Hindu man killed by a presumably Christian mob in Kandhmal [5]. In contrast, the very next day on 27th of September, the communist national daily, 'The Hindu' applied their Goebellesque [6] imagination by insisting that some man was killed by members of the majority community!

Rediff.com reported on 3rd of October that two Hindus had been hacked to death [7] , however they had no word of condemnation for any Christian group, which is in total contrast to their behaviour when a victim is other than Hindu.

France 24 a French daily in one of their inflammatory articles accused the late Swami Laxmananda Saraswati to be an extremist fundamentalist eliminated by Maoists for good
reason. And yet, Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi continue to bend over backwards to appease hyperbolic Christian sensitivities of the West [8] actively engaged in funding the likes of Project Joshua which relentlessly rushes to Christianize India by the turn of the next century. While
this conflagration rages on, the debate over conversion has been sidelined. Unconstitutional, unlawful conversion is cheered in the name of providing health and education services through quacks and Christian geocentric theories respectively. Any nationalist and Hindu rescuing his faith through reconversion is deemed communalist and cause of tension, a situation strangely reminiscent of the Raj's attitude which V D Savarkar had summed up thus;

"If reconversion movement created tension, why should the conversion movement not be considered so? I emphasize that if at all anybody was to be held responsible for the tension, the missionaries and the maulvis should be held so because they had started the conversion first ... moreover, I was doing sacred work for my nation which is being exploited in her fallen days by foreign faiths. It was a strange attitude on the part of a government that allowed robbers to commit robberies and prohibited the owners from protecting and defending their property"

Ultimately, cynical exploitation of an unfortunate rape victim's tragic story and zealously transforming her into a "secular" mascot in the political crusade against 'imaginary Hindu fundamentalism' is representative of the absolute amorality of its agents.
