Born Confused: Hi Dad...er...Mom

Thomas Beatie

Poor baby!

The two word opening is not condescending.

Can you imagine the little baby being utterly confused between mom and dad. Thank you mom….er……dad….er…..not you mom, dad…

34 year old Thomas Beattie, former pageant queen Tracy LaGondino of Hawaii, lately of Oregon has given birth to a baby girl, ABC News has reported.

He told People magazine he decided to get pregnant after wife of five years Nancy had a hysterectomy.

So to answer the question: how can a man be pregnant? Well, Beatie actually used to be a woman, then decided he wanted to be a man, and then decided he wanted to have a baby. When he had surgery to become a man, he had his breasts removed and was given testosterone to make him look and sound like a man, but he chose to keep his female reproductive organs. So Beatie is really a man/woman hybrid. Call him a freak, if you like.

Baby incubating aside, renting a womb aside, switching roles aside, I found this very interesting. Beattie has a penchant for coining words. Look at this play on maternity clothes:

'Unfortunately, they don't make man-ternity clothes,' he remarked recently.

Is it progress? Tides run - time does not remain still. But what is this? Will pigs fly next? Will democracy take root in Iraq? Or Pakistan? Will Bal Thackeray come out of the closet? Will Modi waltz with Mullah Omar?

What will the kid do when the school wants her to bring her dad with her next PTA meeting?

Now there will be no solace in beer drinking. A beer belly can be mistaken for pregnancy.

And did you read about the one year old baby carrying another fetus? No, not another miracle, I assure you. It is a medical condition called FiF. Fetus-in-Fetus.

So to the All India Eunuch Association Chairperson and the Von Siffers: hold your peace. We are not there yet.

love people who are in awe of words. words are the sole arbiter and the final survivor. desicritic editor, slave and slave-driver.

I don't know where I stand on this- but wish the couple a healthy baby.

I think it is becoming more and more necessary that we as humans draw a stringent line between "what we would do" if it were our choice and what is socially acceptable...for the latter in matters such as the one this article chronicles is not our choice. Its theirs. People who immediately are up in arms about the "unacceptability" of things don't seem to see this line and thus oppose same sex marriages, abortion rights, etc.

Also, I think kids learn to allocate "mom" and "dad" titles based on what they are taught, on their perception after being born and not based on biologically who they came out of. A baby that first says the words "mama" says it because he/ she is taught those labels. Conditioning plays a major role I think.

I also think of teen pregnancy where 14 yr olds have kids and have a feeling these two, however odd a set of mom-dad, may make better parents than a teen. Teen moms freak me out way more than two mature adults giving birth to a child, no matter who the child will pop out of. Who knows maybe the kid will benefit out of having a father who was more involved in her birth. Maybe with a set of such unusual parents she will grow up to be more accepting and liberal as a person.

This is one of the most judgmental articles I have ever read.

adi:

you got it right...it is conditioning that i alluded to

am sure while raising the kid the couple would be sensitive and intelligent as they mentioned in several interviews

but the child would also be exposed to societal conditioning when she leaves home for kindergarten...

that will open her to a different set of pressures

***

bottomline: this is one-off freak happening

should not read more than that in it;)
