Wait until bus-bombings start happening. It's only a matter of time before terror takes that route. Then your traveling etiquette issues will be the least of your worries.

1. Indians and concepts like 'civic sense', 'road rules' etc. don't go together. We have to accept that fact.

2. A large chunk of commuters in Delhi fall in the "semi-literate" category. They hardly know the existing road rules and systems; its difficult for them to internalize and accept a novel concept like Bus Rapid Transit. General "Awareness" is very poor. They don't bother about the problems. Just spit on the roads, complain about the potholes, and curse the driver trying to overtake you.

3. Even if they know, most Delhiites don't give a sh*t to the road rules anyways. They are too APATHETIC!

4. ... "first invented in Curitiba, Brazil in 1974. Other cities that are now using BRT are Bagota Quito, Perreira, Guayaquil, Guatemala City, Los Angeles, Ottawa, Miami, Leeds and Adelaide. Cities like Tokyo, Taipei, Seoul and Lagos have taken up the BRT system now. In India, the system has been partly taken up in Indore, Pune and Ahmedabad, other than Delhi."

Firstly, except maybe for Lagos, all the other cities are situated in the 'developed' countries. These cities have a population which is much smaller in size compared to that of Delhi. They have a population which is much more LITERATE and AWARE compared to the population of Delhi. These cities possess a caring, smart and active electorate, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY A LAW-ABIDING POPULATION.

5. The Indian electorate as well as the government is generally stupid, narrow-minded and apathetic. There is no sense of community, unity and co-operation. The sad part as you mentioned is that the Indian intelligensia has its head in the clouds, full of bizzare theories and formulas, disconnected from the ground reality.

6. So I would put the blame mainly on the citizens of Delhi, who crib about living in sh*t, but are too lazy and stupid to do anything to clean up the sh*t. And the politicians find new ways to dump more new sh*t while trying half-heartedly to clean up the old sh*t, cause they're full of sh*t anyway.

Love and peace to all,
Ayan
