<description>Kiran,

Banking Cash Transaction Tax has worked wonders in smoking out people who though had millions stashed away in their bank accounts did not even possess a permanent account number and never filed a return of income. The banks submit details of these people to the Income tax department whenever they withdraw cash above a certain amount. The IT department checks its records to see if those people are taxpayers. If they aren&#039;t, it swoops down on them. If honest taxpayers like you had to shell out a few rupees as BCTT, I think it was worth the trouble--you have helped the Indian government in detecting tax cheats.

Regarding Section 80D deduction in respect of a parent, the amount can go up to Rs 20k if the parent is above 65. But I don&#039;t understand how do you think this additional relief would be a setback to the insurance sector.

The much talked about Rs 60000 crore debt-waiver is clearly an election gimmick, making a mockery of farmers who did not renege on their loans and made great sacrifices to repay them to the banks. I don&#039;t know how many suicides will it prevent, but it will certainly germinate a culture of delinquency among the farming community--many unscrupulous ones will be tempted to borrow from public sector banks especially around an election year and wait for the government to dole out a waiver as part of its election largesse.

This huge loss of Rs 60k crore to the banks it seems will be made good by issuing some sort of bonds to the banks, like those issued to the oil marketing companies to let them wipe off some of the losses accumulated as a result of government-dictated oil prices.

Sanjeev
