Interview: Shah Rukh Khan - "Let Deepika Touch BBC's Body"

February 09, 2008
Tony Tharakan

I don't like attending press conferences by Shah Rukh Khan. You are likely to find yourself packed in a room with some 500 photographers, reporters and guests all clamouring for a dekko at the King Khan.

Now the Ballroom at Delhi's Oberoi hotel is pretty big but I still felt a bit claustrophobic when Khan dropped in earlier this week to promote a liquor brand's 'Don't Drink and Drive campaign'.

The pretty reporter behind me wasn't helping matters by squealing "He's so sexy, I so want to take him home" whenever Khan smiled.

Clad all in black, the star had arrived on time (surprisingly) and was bombarded with questions on everything except the brand he had come there to promote. One enthusiastic reporter was upset that actress Deepika Padukone had been denied the chance to be the first to touch Shah Rukh's six-pack abs for Om Shanti Om. Well, "feel your body" was how he put it, perhaps incorrectly quoting what Deepika had told BBC Radio in an interview. Khan was nonplussed - at first.
"She should have told me. She never told me. If she tells BBC, she can touch BBC's body. If she tells me, she can touch my body."

Perhaps the inquirer still looked upset, for Khan looked him in the eye and asked, "You want to touch my body?"

When the laughter had died down and the reporter had stopped blushing, the barrage of questions continued. But Khan parried them with practised ease.

Why did you spend so much money on cricket's Indian Premier League?
"Maine jaha se kamaya mera tha, maine jaha lagaya meri marzi" (I earned it and it was mine to spend wherever I pleased)

There's already so much money in cricket..
"Aap ne gina hai?" (Have you counted it?)

Why you bought Kolkata team instead of Delhi where you grew up?
"I couldn't afford Delhi. That's why I left and went to Bombay. Delhi's very expensive."

Will you make a film based on the 'Don't Drink and Drive campaign'?
"Making a film on this topic? How will I make a three hour film in which I keep saying 'Don't drink! Don't drink! Don't drink!' - it will be weird...'Devdas' was based on drinking."

Is this campaign some kind of disaster management for your "no smoking" tiff with Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss?
"It'll be really stupid of me if someone doesn't like me smoking to give him the message 'Don't drink'. I should be saying 'Don't smoke'."

Will your reel image prove a burden on your real life?
"It's not that when I walk on the streets, people think of me as drunk, smoker, vulgar, idiotic. In fact, when I come to Delhi, people say I am smart, handsome, educated, articulate and well-bred."

In Chak De and Om Shanti Om, you had new girls working opposite you. Even in Aditya Chopra's project, he's searching for a new face - why don't our heroines want to work with you?
"Girls can't tolerate me for long. They get tired."

It's not that Khan wasn't serious at all - he also spoke at length about his "smoking" controversy, his injury years ago that forced him to give up sports for acting, his plans for building sports infrastructure in the country. But all that has been splashed across national newspapers.

But it's the little things that fans don't get to read or hear. Like how he scolded a reporter he spotted discussing something with a friend.
"Are you listening? You are chatting away there. Pay attention to me. Then you won't get confused."

Believe me, that poor girl was the only one not paying attention - the rest of the audience was hanging on to each of Khan's words. And for those of you who aren't convinced about the Bollywood star being the best ambassador for a 'Don't Drink and Drive campaign', here's what Khan has to say.
"I myself am not a hard liquor drinker. The hardest I drink is Pepsi on the rocks."

Kunal, seriously mate, re-read the article. If you want me to lay it out for you- the author reported it as he saw it and we all appreciated SRK's sense of humor. He may not be a good actor but he is an intelligent man.

Deepti first of all dudette thanks for explaining the article to me. But seriously dude comments like "surprisingly he came on time", "He scolded a girl" Now see I read it nowhere but here that SRK was rude to anyone. I am not saying author is lying but I have seen Shahrukh's press conferences, and being from Delhi myself that theres a way we talk. Its not rude just a bit loud, and that too for having fun.
And moreover even if this time I am wrong, you scan Desicritic's archives, you will see what I am saying

Kunal, by far Tony has been very fair to SRK and he is entitled to his opinion if he thinks SRK was a bit rude . From SRK's point of view I think he doesn't care much for media since they are known to quote people out of context.

And btw I don't need to look at the archives I am one of the few who have talked about SRK on this site.

kunal, what is your point? even if every person on this site hates SRK, what would it matter? people are free to like or not like him as they wish.

I never understand this need for the average man to defend stars they themselves do not know. SRK does not need you to defend his honor! he probably does not give a flying rat's ass what some silly people on a silly website say about him one way or the other!

He's an interesting, intelligent guy, with a sense of humour. He has a great body. I think, if someone who doesn't know him just met him at a party, he'd still stand out. The man can actually converse. Me, I'm delighted there's a guy out there who single-handedly raises the attractiveness index of the entire nation.

Deepti if you really have participated in this forum, I bet you know that there is an anti-Shahrukh feeling over here. Thats the only thing I said. And even over here you can very well see the pot shots. Deserving or undeserving thats a different thing all together, like "Surprisingly he came on time", "I never like attending his press conferences"
And Smallsquirrel, OFC Shahrukh doesn't really need me or anyone else defending him, neither I am defending him.
I just pointed out something I noticed here, and pointed that out. Neither I cursed the author, nor I defended Shahrukh by saying he is this he is that.

"Surprisingly he came on time",

Kunal, the reason why it was surprising is because rarely are celebrities on time. Even on sets actors piss each other off by turning up late hence one of them showing punctuality is of historical proportions.

The only other actor I know who is equally well mannered and still acts like a regular guy is Amir Khan but thats another matter altogether.

As far as pot shots go- hey even SRK took some reporter's trip by asking whether the reporter wanted to touch his body. And it was taken in the spirit it was intended- all in good faith and generous doze of humor.

On DC authors and commentators alike are welcome to express their varied opinions, we don't promote any kind of agendas. If you think otherwise on any matter you are most welcome to rebuttal.

See the thing is that if you come across both sides of story you take it in that spirit, but rarely I have come across anything like this over here.
See you can see the tone of the article over here, its negative from start to the finish. And its not just this article, but every article about Shahrukh I ever came across over here. Not that I am pissed off or anything like that, but just highlighting something I noticed. Its just the way how some sites are way too leaning over Shahrukh, example filmikhabar thing. Even they are not balanced.
And thats what I am talking about. Even DC is not balanced, its a bit too much of Anti Shahrukh thing over here.
Anyhow not that I am having any agenda of mine against you or this place, just my opinion.

oh for the love of god kunal, seriously, you made your point 2 days and 6 responses ago... not to be rude, but my god! who cares if this site leans toward hating shah rukh. I have a life-sized crush on the man and yet still I don't much care if this site is balanced or not. it doesn't claim to be the home of balanced bollywood reporting!

my advice to you is that you get a hobby.

Smallsquirrel if you think my comments are so trivial why bother replying?????
I am not that sorta person who won't reply to squirrel if she talked to me.
You said something I replied. Do I care about where the opinions of people are leaning?? You asked something I explained my point. Not that I am against it, though I am against any kinda partisan approach, but then not on the issue of Shahrukh Khan.
And BTW I have a hobby, Real Madrid, and they won 7-0 dude. Anyhow they were not playing and I happened to venture out. Anyhow if that was you not being rude.... I wonder.....

Although I am not a fan of Mr Khan in films, I do like his sense of humour in real life. And I thought it was apparent in my post.

As for the punctuality remark - well, all I want to say is I covered another press conference by SRK today and he was almost two hours late. Just like any other Bollywood celebrity (so don't think I am only taking potshots at him).

Khan wasn't as witty this time around but that could probably be blamed on jet-lag. After all, he flew in from the Berlin film fest, met Farah and her triplets in Mumbai and was in Delhi today to mark the launch of his new TV game show.

Will try and post some "unpublished" stuff from the presser as soon as possible.

Why does desicritics not have a single blog on:
1. Chak de India - a truly timely and moving film?
2. On the recent honor bestowed by the French government on Shahrukh?
3. On the way all of Europe seemed at his feet at the Berlinale?

In fact the regulars at this site have never said one positive thing about the man. Did you guys band together with one goal - that of bashing Mr. Khan?

Thats so unfair, no one asked Sanjay Leela Bhansali for his original script when he made Devdas.

it is not hard

here

treat this as an assignment ... write her first name or nick name here ... say susan...five letters?

next write down ten or twelve short sentences

any subject that comes to mind...the sentences need not be on a theme...just simple sentences and then post them here

i will look at it tomorrow and we will see what emerges:)

ps: forget ash ... heard she tied the knot with a tree first and then...found another wooden boyfriend
