Movie Review: Om Shanti Om - Bandal To The Very End

November 13, 2007
Sakshi Juneja

As we were entering the cinema hall, a friend remarked “I don’t like Shah Rukh Khan. The man can’t act even if his life depended on it”. Before I could utter my wise words, another friend gave the most apt reply. She said, “In Shah Rukh Khan’s films no one is expected to act. They are only meant to entertain.” And so, true to my friend’s very words SRK’s latest production, Om Shanti Om makes no exception.

Frankly I was not very impressed with Farah Khan’s debut film, “Main Hoon Na”. And sad to say, her second film as a director falls couple of notches even below the first one. Now before I proceed, let me get one thing straight – I really like Farah Khan. Be it as a choreographer, a Bollywood personality or a Hindi Phillum buff. The woman is witty and has a wacky sense of humor which so severely lacks in our Mumbai Film Industry. But don’t know why in spite of all the above qualities she miserably fails as a film maker!

Agreed, spoofs of other movies require an added dosage of overacting but here we have the film maker, (pardon my Hindi) fucking hell doing maa behan of overacting. Making matters worse and among other countless flaws; the story plot appears to be rushed up, can’t understand if they are aping the 60s... the 70s or is it the 80s and the film’s climax is one of the worst I have seen in a very long time.

If you manage to survive the first phase, the 2nd phase is sure to shoot you down – the comedy (if one may call that) completely stinks, SRK miserably fails to pull-off the act of a young superstar, debutant Deepika is a stunner for sure but the woman is way-off the acting mark and what’s with her voice? Otherwise a fantastic actress, Kiron Kher literally gets on your nerves, not very surprisingly Arjun Rampal once again fails to leave a mark (and add to that a really bad make-up job) and the six pack song “Dard-E-Disco” would have been better off named “Dard-Lagta-Hai-Isko-Dekhko”. And no matter how loudly the director screams in disagreement; OSO is a miserable attempt at remaking yesteryear’s super hit film, Karz.

Talking of the few bright moments:

1. Shreyas T Alpade is the only sane one among the lot.

2. The 31 stars item number is very well shot. Karisma looks hot and Shilpa, now is this woman sexy or what?

3. The Filmfare awards sequence is fantastic.

As for final words – Om Shanti Om is a full on bandal film to the last frame (barring the very few exceptions) but as my friend mentioned above it will surely entertain the Indian masses (here or overseas) simply because the word itself is very much adulterated these days.

PS: Reading OSO reviews here, here and here, once again re-affirmed my belief that most things can be bought off so easily nowadays.

hi thoroughbred-person..and whats that yep..the "forgive-my-hindi" type ..(nothin personal ...mr or miss sakshi..cant seem to make that out...a feminist hmmm...must be miss then..)...anyways i do seem to wonder how thou art able to write a "review"(whatever u call that..)..when thy hindi is as u say ...forgivable...well if that is the extent of thy familiarity , questions do arise as to how u can even understand the movies in-film spooofs...guess u had a hard time in the first half...anyways , ur point that srk had a hard time actin a young superstar in the second half holds...but sadly ur entire premise is wrong..dont u get it(or i wonder if it is a ploy to act "arty-n-classy"...), srk is FYI doin exactly that...u must give it to the man ..he has the courage to laugh at himself...just check out the sequence durin the filmfare nominations..a joke on his repetitive style of films...u know only real honest people can sincerely make a foll of themselves ...n get the laughs mind u...thats just for starters...i must confess i m not much of a srk fan, but the man is beyond thy understandin...funnily enough (though as an 18 yr old guy in bits goa..talkin to a exec.,its odd...)..but yep funnily i do seem to pity u.....what works for the masses, thy highness is just too-NR tahn hte I of NRI to enjoy it...wonder what diwali u had...watched cruise make poker face in lions for lambs...hoho....what a way to "enjoy" diwali...

Best possible way to attract people to the website, is to slam an SRK movie..........

BTW, To enjoy OSO, one needs to have good understanding of Hindi movies and its makers. Truth is out, majority are enjoying it. And for SRK, detractors were always there and boost him further everytime.

How did he do Chak De?

OSO is such a pathertic movie that I can't believe this actor last signed for Chak De and actaully was instrumental in making it what it was instead of getting it down with hsi mannerisms

@rohit
just because srk is able to laugh at himself doesnt make him a good actor or make this movie worthy of seeing...i dont see how you bring that point up...maybe thats bcoz you dont have any valid points to defend your "king of bollywood" srk....i guess you should pity urself.....nd i am dont enjoy having a dig at srk and his fans...if his movies are good i say so...like chak de,...cant remember nemore recent ones...;)

This is the most biased review for OSO, this reviewer is positively from Bhansali camp who is going mad because even after the major hype created by Sony media etc the film flopped and the sales was generated because people were fooled to go see the movie....

OSO is sustaining the sales after 1 week and Saawariya lost the revenues after 1 week as people are not getting fooled anymore...

This reviewer should be disciplined for trashing movie....

Ok now I am worried...my own review of OSO is up tonight. Its gonna be a different take from this one which is interesting coz thus far I think my reviews and Sakshi's have been fairly similar.

I read your film review and proceeded to watch the movie with your words in my mind acting as a reminder.... "In Shah Rukh Khan's films no one is expected to act. They are only meant to entertain." You so darn right!!! Bang on target. One needs to know before hand what to expect out of a certain movie. If one expects OSO (or movies like that..dhoom3 etc) to be some kind of phenomenal acting school of cinem...well well..they need to get their fundamentals right.

Deepika looks good and danced well. That's about it for her in this movie but still good enough for her first movie. Spoofs on other movies were still okay....but digs on some actors...didn't find it funny but rather distasteful. Looks like creativity and ideas seriously lacks these days.

Interesting review.. very lucid and objective.

ShaQx,To enjoy OSO, one doesn't need to have "good understanding" of hindi movies and its makers. Wht is ther to understand, hindi movies these days are like comics, just go to the theatres and just bring along 2 big menus of mcdonalds and eat like pig, thn only u can enjoy hindi movies. Ther ar some good "cinema" i.e RDB, munnabhai, w.provoking messages. But who cares as long as you want to do something 4 society, protest, or train for miss india and mr.india contests.
