Mr. Rumi,
I have never read this Urdu langauge author. I have no plans to read her in the near future. I do not want to discover her through the barriers of English-language translation. I really need to learn Urdu. Your belated preview (why you waited for her death to write such a glowing piece?)has only hastened the urgency for me to look for an Urdu master.

Temporal
thanks for the comments -
It is important to recall that Hyder believed in the quintessentially secular and ideally inclusive vision for the subcontinent.

Alas, her death has made us poorer.

raza:

thanks for this:)

annie was an icon of literature and iconoclastic...

she did not suffer fools easily...was aloof and imperious but not impervious

her knowledge and writing canvas was vast, observations sharp

Ainee is perhaps the only Urdu writer to have translated her own works in English.

the other marker novel that defined the creative 50s in urdu is abdullah hussain's udaas naslein ...where he unabashedly copied annie's style...(and acknowledged it much later)

he also translated udaas naslein into english

aslam farrukhi...friend (her's not mine) and critic says both aag ka darya and udaas naslein await better renderings in english

Deepti:
thanks for the comment :)
My intention was to provide the interested readers here with a detailed overview of QH's stature in South Asian/deis literature.

Due to the shrinking Urdu readership, Qh's works are not widely known. Let's hope that competent translations will appear in due course -

cheers, Raza
