Comment by The Itinerant Indian

Very well written. The Itinerant Indian who used to pride himself on his English, finds that his Indian is considered archaic. Those of us who are well schooled in our English seem like we stepped out of a time machine, speaking English from Wodehouse.

And from there straight to the sms version of English. "How da do?"

We seemed to have missed a trick in the middle.

Deepa:
Thank you :) I don't get the concept of the invisible 'r' at the end of the 'a' sound either. Instead of 'Emma and so-and-so', folks say 'Emmar-and so-and-so'. go figure!

Tanya er, Tanay:
Thank you kindly! Glaswegian accent is a whole new ball game, innit?

Eggxactly :), reminds me how I, was always addressed as 'Taanya', in a heavy Scottish accent during my stay in Glasgow for 5 months, 2 years back.

DesiGirl, once a desi always a desi and proudly so, what if with a few glitches in pronunciation [sounds, rather feels awkward when you know that you didn't make any mistake from your point of view, then when you learn from someone your mistake, you say to yourself, Ohhhhhhhhh is it, anyways thats learning]..Sooper post

rhyming slang makes my mind curdle.

As a linguist by education, the differences between the "englishes" also fascinate me. Indian english is by far the most interesting to me because while I can clearly see the British influence (in spelling, in sentence structure, etc.) it has also taken it's own path and evolved into something totally separate.

I still think my fave is the use of "homely" for someone who has good domestic skills. In the US homely means someone who is very, very ugly. No one would purposefully search for a HOMELY bride! :)

HA HA!
I actually like rhyming slang, Ams. Every day at work I go, 'so why is that called so?' and everyone asks everyone else till it comes back to me: 'L, why don't you Google it and tell us!'

Ahem, how about a translation then?

God, that rhyming slang is awful! No wonder Hollywood keeps screwing it up and still can't resist it. Moths to a flame.
