Satire: Gere-ing Up For Shilpa: A Fervent Appeal
The Great Ganesha
Actor Richard Gere has sparked protests in India after kissing Celebrity Big Brother winner Shilpa Shetty at an AIDS awareness rally in New Delhi.Demonstrators in Mumbai (Bombay) set light to effigies of the Hollywood star, while protesters in other cities shouted "death to Shilpa Shetty".
The protesters said Gere insulted Indian culture by kissing the hand and face of the Bollywood actress.
What is this world coming to? Our culture is being destroyed, bit by bit. White men forcefully kissing brown women on stage. This, of course, means only one thing: White culture is slowly taking over Indian culture. At this rate, we will not have any culture left. And then what will happen?
Just the other day, I was telling a friend of mine, whatever happened to the chaste days when Pandit-ji used to sleep with Lady Mountbatten? At least they never did it in public. And when, in films, the heroine used to get pregnant only by rainy days in a forest, with the hero on the other side of a tree. This was significant of the one-ness of nature that is in our culture. But no more. These days heroines are running around naked and white people are kissing our own Hindu girls. Once again I ask, what is this world coming to?
I beg you, please burn more effigies of Richard Gere. It is imperative that you do so. Only then can we prevent our culture from being destroyed. If we don't burn more effigies, then there will be nothing left of our culture. In these trying times, it might be hard to find effigies. In that case, burn a picture. But please do it fast. Otherwise there will be no Indian culture left. I thank you wholeheartedly.
Postscript: In the event that you need some inspiration, and if you have the constitution for it, you may watch a video of the ignoble deed.

Give me a break. It wasnt as bad as u guys make it out to be. It was normal fr gere and shilpa and fr truck drivers seein the show.
If at all u want to do something, do some aids awareness, burnin effigies of gere or shilpa does nothing. Gere is foreigner and fr him this is very normal and fr shilpa she seems more concerned of her popularity than her chaste.
India is 2nd place in AIDS and now u have tgo decide how do we eradicate:
1) by using condoms which westerners succesfully do.
2) by really followin our culture which is more ethical and moral thing to do.

doin either of it is fine as india is free country and legally u can have sex wit as many partners as u like. Legally its not crime. But at a time when US looks to india fr engneers and doctors, little bit of sense will make us understand tat our culture has made us such great engineers and doctors. We need to hold onto our culture or else india can become anoher USA

Well, it seems that this video was deemed far too risqué for our innocent eyes, LOL! The video has been "removed by the user" on YouTube. Oh now what will we do for titillation?!
Excellent satire, love your writing style. :-)

"...And when, in films, the heroine used to get pregnant only by rainy days in a forest, with the hero on the other side of a tree..." :-D
There would also be a fire simmering in the background!! As a kid, these movies made me believe that if a man and a woman hang out around a fire they are married and hence she gets pregnant :)..
We need more sex on screen, I do not want my kids to grow up with such misconceptions. Our ancestors were smart, they carved them all out on temple walls..

Is this for real?
How on earth is "buring effegies" of Gere going to make any difference?
He's kissing her ON THE CHEEK! It's not like his raping her. I think that if there is somebody who truely respects the Indian culture it's Gere. Focus your anger at something important instead.

Clara..
They did focus their anger at something important - public exhibitionism, promiscious and gratitiuous behavior, relationships outside marraige etc contributing to AIDS. That is what that kiss dished out to millions of viewers around the country epitomized and that Gala was about AIDS awareness, wasn't it?
