Vikram, from what I see, changing of mobiles is a fashion among the college going crowd. It the new age gadget which combines a phone + mp3 player + camera. As one matures [age factor], a mobile is something that needs to be handy and just serves your purpose of talking.

If you follow the mobile trend, the basic versions work fine in rural, semi-urban and mid-towns in India. Its only the big cities and the metros, that too with a limited population which has this mobilophobia [i.e changing brands/models/blah blah]

The primary aim of the mobile phones is to provide voice based services. Most of the people restrict the usage of the phone to voice services only , its the advent of the 2.5G and 3G that new phones have arrived in the market which attract especially college going people. A better phone is like a status symbol in a school these days not matter what services these people use

I have a big grouse against Airtel.Airtel conducted a KBC contest on their phones without mentioning the premium sms rate which is a violation of TRAI guidelines.I logged up a bill of Rs 3500 as a result of this and they havent offered any discount.

Kela

Which Airtel circle are you in?
I am sure they must have mentioned premium rates somewhere (in fine print If I may). Typically before they launch such schemes they get these approved by their legal team.

Chandra : this is the AIrtel shortcut to KBC contest for which they are charging rs6 per sms. They don't mention this when they send details of the contest.I have saved the messages.Airtel has committed a blunder with regard to this,i even got my letter published in the letters to editor column of ourlocal daily,i could have made it a news item if i wanted. The regional manager gave a lame excuse saying I didnt enquire about the rates when as per TRAI guidelines the cell phone company should inform customers about the preimium rates.I could have taken this to the consumer court but its unnecessary hassle.I am in the north-east circle but i suppose it should be the same all over india

It is a trend where you will never be able to catch up :) unless you change phones twice every lunar cycle

& kela - thanks for the idea - I think it should go in as Mobile Rule no.#5 :)(sorry to hear about your bill though)
