Shantanu:
I agree with your views. Yes, 1857 revolt that started off as a mutiny which was then taken up by certain landlords, petty rajahs and Mughal-Empire-Revivalists. It was their attempt to get back their power away from British. It was not an attempt to give freedom to Indian people (the masses). There was no concept to citizenry, legislature, adult franchise or judiciary. It was an attempt to go back to monarchy, where the rulers are native people instead of foreign people.

Shantanu

Whatever you say about our leaders,....during the last 50 years our average Income growth rates were between 3 times to 9 times of what the British gave us between 1850 to 1950. After nearly 90 years of british rule we ended up with a 20% literacy.....and 3 times that level in exactly 50 years....

So by any standards we should be pleased to have our own rule.

As far as the events of 1857 are concerned, the fact is that a number of Indians fought against the British, whatever the reasons. It is only natural that multiple stakeholders fought for their own interests.
