American Idol: Who's Voting For Sanjaya Malakar?

March 23, 2007
Amrita Rajan

For a largely inoffensive young man, Sanjaya Malakar is sure kicking up a dust storm that looks set to outperform the Antonella Barba virus that infected the Internet just a couple of weeks ago.

Over on Television without Pity, for example, forum members have taken to calling him Send-jaya-home. And that's because they're kind. Some of the other nicks floating around are more on the Sanjayjay (I guess this really is the Grey's Anatomy generation) track. And it's all a bit bizarre because this virulent hatred of his presence on Idol is coupled with almost catatonic indifference towards him as a person.

As American Idol heads into its Top 10 week (Gwen Stefani performs with Akon and Mentor no less - I don't know who sold his soul to the Devil to get Prince on that stage last year but it's opened the floodgates proper) everybody just wants to know one thing - who's voting for Sanjaya? There might be the odd person who writes in his defense but a big block of the audience is patently puzzled by his survival week after week. If everybody wasn't so busy agreeing on how much he sucks, I get the feeling they'd have forgotten his existence.

When Idol devoted half his airtime to a hysterically sobbing little fan in the audience Tuesday night, many were felt their worst fears confirmed - this then was the demographic feverishly voting to keep Sanjaya in place. Maybe, but the little girl turned out to be a cynical ploy - filched by the almighty Idol producers from Fox's Jeff Foxworthy-hosted latest assault on all our inner stupid children, for those awesome tear ducts that just won't quit.

Others sense the smug hand of the good people from Vote for the Worst who proudly declared Sanjaya their poster boy the day Sundance Head packed his bags and went off to shout somewhere else. I'm sure they're dedicated worker bees in their quest to bring Idol low but a little voice questions their ultimate power - do they really have the numbers to vote Sanjaya into safety every week?

Of course, they could be getting some help from like-minded people, a list presently headed by Howard Stern. I'm not a radio gal and from what little I've heard of him, I think he works the shock-jock a little too hard but hey! There might be people who listen to him. If Rush Limbaugh can mobilize political votes, then why can't Stern rock the Idol vote? Who knows what dark deeds go on in the cult of radio? It could happen.

But maybe it's the pity vote. The producers, those Machiavellian heavy-handed manipulators who could hardly contain their glee the moment Sanjaya walked into the auditions (remember the Brother! Sister! Drama! nonsense they sprung on us?) have certainly done a good job of making us all feel bad for the kid.

Not only does he look completely defenseless up there on stage with his giant smile and goofy hair (all those hair-stylists and make-up artists and things and you let him walk out in public with Diana Ross hair? Seriously? Even Diana Ross doesn't look good with a Diana Ross do! And don't even get me started on that shout out to Michael -HolyMotherofGodYouDidn't!- Jackson!) but it tugs at the heartstrings to see him land up in the bottom slot week after week being set up as the guy who robbed a more deserving contestant. A dim light must have gone off somewhere though because they gave him a break on that this week.

And how uncomfortable is it to watch Ryan Seacrest trying to needle him into making some sort of an attempt at a retort to the judges? Which brings us to the linchpin - Simon Cowell.

It's hard to remember now that Simon was actually very nice to Sanjaya in the beginning - hard, because in the weeks since then you can almost feel him wince every time his gaze falls on the kid. And then he made, what I think was a tactical mistake - he famously said that he'd leave the show if Sanjaya became the next Idol.

Simon being Simon, he was probably just handing out a sound bite but dude! Does he have no idea how much that would have appealed to some people? The ones who're offended just by the fact that he wakes up in the morning? I bet those guys are frantically pushing the buttons for their cause: A Vote for Sanjaya Today Will Keep Simon Away.

But the latest theory on the subject takes the cake as far as I'm concerned: workers at Indian BPOs are calling in for Sanjaya and keeping him in the game.

There you have it people! This was our plan all along! First we inveigled our way into your homes by paying Hank Azaria to talk like he had a speech impediment and then we took away your jobs by dangling better profit margins in the face of your companies and now - now, we're going to take American Idol! One more year, America, and you'll all be eating monkey brains! BWAHAHAHA!

Oh, shut up. Look, race and Idol have shared a complicated relationship for a long time now whether it was Frenchie getting kicked off while Barba got to stay or Ruben Stoddard beating out Clay Aiken with the alleged backing of Oprah. But it is beyond ridiculous to say that there is a BPO pact to vote for him. It isn't just paranoid, it's insulting.

First of all, those BPO workers are far too busy ripping off your bank accounts to waste their time voting for American Idol.

Kidding!

But got you there for a second, didn't I? Mull on that while I point out the utter idiocy of letting a TV show take such control of your life that you'd be willing to believe an entire industry, if not an entire country, was out to support your least favorite contestant. I've written before about Sanjaya's ethnicity being a factor in some people's eyes but as an Indian, I assure you we're too busy hating each other (as Russell Peters pointed out) to get together on a scale that would keep Sanjaya's Idol dreams alive.

And even if some kind of unilateral memo went out in Bangalore and told all the drones to hit the voting line - how many of them do you think there are? We're a country with a billion people all right but there's more to India than Bangalore and not all of us are computer geeks or customer service personnel now waiting patiently for your next phone call.

All of this, of course, has had an impact on the kid himself. How could it not? Fortress Idol isn't exactly cut off from the rest of the world and it can't be nice to wake up every day and find more people hating on you. We've seen Sanjaya go from a shy but talented young singer to a sad-eyed, increasingly desperate performer who wouldn't survive Antakshari on Zee TV at this rate.

Other 17 year olds have performed brilliantly on the same stage (three of them last season alone and Jordin Sparks is another one this year) but not every kid is up to the kind of pressure this type of television generates. Sanjaya is a cautionary tale on a completely different level than the talentless hacks who populate Idol's initial rounds - you need something more than talent to compete on a show like Idol: you need the psychological grit to survive it. Had he auditioned, say a year into his college experience, who knows? Maybe he wouldn't have fallen apart after the judges called him on his boring first performance and might have had a real chance.

It's obvious that Sanjaya, like every other Idol contestant, has managed to build a fan base. It could well be a consortium of interests: tweenies, VFTW-ers, obedient Stern fans, Simon-haters, Indians and Italians (hey, this could be the image change they've been waiting for).

If all this is too much for you to deal with, I suggest you check out the X Factor. Much more fun, much less drama.

The Post-Gazette says

"when Sanjaya Malakar sang "You Really Got Me" and got that little girl, Ashley, to cry in the audience, he bought his ticket to the top six, at least. LaKisha Jones and Melinda Doolittle are going to wind up with record deals no matter what, so send Sanjaya to the top just so Simon Cowell has to squirm and give this kid a deal!

Bravo. A very funny read. I'd credit VFTW and Stern for keeping him on the show but I'm starting to think there is a ground swell of support building beyond those two sources. I think Idol viewers in general are getting sick of how the show "plays them." People are starting to wise up -- Idol peaked last season and it's all down hill from here.

Aaman - is this true? You're a Sanjaya shipper? Omg, it's all becoming clear to me!

Jewels - sure he can sing. But I don't think he can ever sing properly on Idol again. He's been beaten into a pulp on that stage for far too long and this isn't a kid with the kind of 'tude that got say, Mikalah Gordon through much the same treatment. Hell, he doesn't even have the Chicken Little sullenness to help him through.

You know how they have psychologists on the show to help you through the elimination and stuff? They should have one in Hollywood Week before they head for the Chair of Sudden Death to help suss out kids like Sanjaya.

Bret - thanks :) Maybe its the Soul Patrol taking revenge for the continued diss of the Hickster? Getting Daughtry to play the contestants off is one thing but Fro Patro? What is Sligh thinking?

Kaonashi - hee hee hee! Isnt that hilarious? I loved it when I heard of it but felt too bad for the kid to use it. I'll wait till he finishes his metamorphosis into Donny Osmond crossed with Michael Jackson version 2007 and then call him that. :D

Amrita, it appears the newest way to be one of the "cool kids" is to bash on Sanjaya. Everyone wanting to appear Pop culture fresh, musically intellectual, and above all, an American Idol expert, are jumping on the Sanjaya bandwagon.

How converting his name into a female body part (Sangina) is so bloody hilarious is trite and malicious. Do insecurities as human beings run so deep as to enjoy the verbal bullying of another? Perhaps there is a need to engage in this activity to feel superior. If anyone needs a psychologist it would be the on-line hyenas eagerly enjoining the bandwagon of tearing Sanjaya apart for attention.

I did not read into his performance this past week, that the boy is verging on a psychological breakdown. It was more like throwing down the gloves in a dual, a "back at you". I hope this next week he comes out and sings loud and proud.

I am a fan of the Moody Blues, lyrics from their song Slings and Arrows"

Jewels - you don't find it funny coz you're his fan. The kid's a bit too pathetic for people to get their coolth on by ragging on him. I'm afraid people just honestly don't like him, incomprehensible as it may be to you. He's not a cultural watershed of the kind you think he is (pls, people were making cracks at AI and AI contestants long before he showed up. Its the nature of the beast) anymore than Antonella "Barbarella/Skankanella" Barba was or Kevin "Chicken Little" Covais was. Get over it.

Amen Amrita! It looks like "some" people are now on their own high horse. I recall in Television Without Pity that they called Chris Daughtry Penishead. I'm a huge fan of Chris but I wasn't offended by it. "Some" people are just too sensitive when it comes to their favorites, especially when they have the hypocrisy to call a certain judge "Slimon".

ITS RACISM period.Frankly this season has been the worst in terms of quality singers.Other than Jordan Sparks and those two semi-pro singers Lakisha and Melinda there's hardly anything to write about the rest. Its just Drama alright,Idol have never said Sanjaya was at the bottom in terms of votes during the previous weeks and yet mischievously used him to create all that unnecessary drama. Why don't Idol publish the votes each contestant polls everyweek ?Anyways I don't think the kid is that bad,I think he has his own style unlike others. He can sing, the judges have never damned him on that count.Simon absolutely hated Taylor Hicks last season and he won.About that website "vote for the worst" thats just a load of BS,they had Taylor Hicks on last time but he still won.Just visit the Idol message boards and you'll get an idea of each contestants popularity by the number of hits made on their boards.Last season Taylor had the most ,almost equal to the combined hits of others. This season its Sanjaya and its not only haters out there.

To clarify I'm not upset by the bashing I'm simply pointing out that many negatively commenting on him whether it is on blogcritics or elsewhere are doing so in a way to make themselves sound knowledgeable and hip.

Also, I don't think he's the best singer on the show by any means, but he does have talent and most definitely, moxie. Also, regarding the singing, there are many singers and performers who have made it in the business that were not the best singers, but had that special elusive star quality - he has that. In the event you've not heard "Sweet Chariot" I'll leave it here for you to listen - boy has soul.

kela, #16 thank you for your addition to the positive points for Sanjaya. NBC called him the "Comeback Kid" on a segment the end of this past week.

like i said in my post, none of the judges have doubted his singing ability, they just didn't like his song choices.last week all the judges including Simon said he did good.So i really don't understand the fuss here, the kid can sing, has charisma and he has his own style. If he believes in himself I think he could become the next Prince and i really think Prince is the greatest singer/music artist of all time :)

Since it's obvious that Jewels is indirectly referring to me, it's also clear that she has never read any of my American Idol Blogcritics posts. If she had, she would see that, while I criticize Sanjaya's performances (and rightfully so), I also criticize many of the other contestants as well, even some of my favorites like Chris Sligh or Gina Glocksen. At the same time, I sometimes gave praise to weaker contestants like Haley Scarnato or Phil Stacey, and even Sanjaya.

Being critical of Sanjaya is not a matter of trying to be cool or hip. My whole family hates Sanjaya, and I didn't even know about this until I spoke on the phone with them recently. But they don't go around websites spreading their thoughts. It's just their own personal opinion, just like most people who has spoken negatively about Sanjaya or any other contestant.

Sure, there are silly people like that girl who's on a hunger strike until Sanjaya gets kicked off the show, but she's just using him to bring attention to herself and her MySpace. But for the most part Jewels, people who say they don't like Sanjaya really just don't like him. There's no ulterior motive to their words. They just don't feel the same way you do. Get over it.

And if you think about it, what about those who are supporting Sanjaya simply because he isn't the best singer? Couldn't that be also be construed as jumping the bandwagon, but in this case to act holier-than-thou and support the underdog?

And finally, I don't know what personal beef Jewels has against me. Many others have commented on her Sanjaya articles in a much, much harsher fashion on how much they can't stand the kid, but somehow I've ticked her off more than the others, simply because I didn't think that he and Taylor Hicks should be compared with each other. Jewels, didn't you get that I LIKED Taylor? Note that she made fun of my screen name in the comments. Interesting, considering that she got upset over the concept of making fun of Sanjaya's name. Jewels, if you want to continue this little game of responding indirectly to me that's your call, but I'll respond to you directly.

kela, I'm so glad the Soul Patrol has members getting on board with Sanjaya, they identify with the heart and soul this boy shows. That's why they like Taylor.

Kaonashi, *checked to see if I got it right*, I have responded directly to you. You did not like having your name confused, so perhaps you'd understand regarding the Sanjaya, name alterations that I find silly. Too, I have no 'beef' with you per se, only with folks who jump on the bashing anyone band wagon to be hip. I'm glad you like Taylor, but did you like him last year in March? February, or January? I liked his vibe from the audition. I like Sanjaya's vibe too.

Cool isn't it that SNL picked Sanjaya up to parody - like they did Hicks. Difference they parodied Hicks in April, and Sanjay now, a month sooner. He needed the boost - a month sooner gives him more time to catch up. I hope he carries on this week in the vein as last week. Polishes up the act a little more and stays on the show. He's interesting in ways many on this show this season are not.

Rock on baby boy. ;)

Jewels- Admittedly I'm more of a Chris Daughtry fan, but I did enjoy Taylor's performances on AI. No I haven't followed his career since last year, but I don't really do that for most of the contestants, including Chris. It doesn't mean that I stopped liking them or appreciating their talents. I'm not the type to do such a thing- at least not anymore. The last time that happened was with Clay Aiken. Man, I was totally nuts about the guy, but then it my excitement and obsession over him wore off after several months. I still think he's a fantastic singer and I listen to his music on occasion, but I don't follow his career anymore.

As for the name thing, consider that your "mispronouncing" my name occurred long before Amrita's mention in her post of derogatory nicknames for Sanjaya. Yes, what I did was retaliatory, but you'll have to admit that neither of us was acting too civil towards each other.

At least we agree on Jordin. I think she's great! She reminds me of a younger Kimberley Locke.

Jewels - I'm with Kaonashi on this one. I can't see any evidence of people trying to give themselves musical props by bashing Sanjaya. Unless you mean that one guy on Youtube who said you can't tackle a song like Aint no Mountain without having the vocals to back him up - an opinion which, btw, you don't need a degree in music to back up.

Now you might say Sanjaya has to vocals to back it up, which brings me back to my point that you can see the psychological effect of getting up on that stage and facing the hate every week. You might have liked his last performance but I thought it was desperate and manic and I don't think I was alone in my opinion.

That said, you're right, people with lesser talents do make it in the music business. And they get slammed for it all the time. If Sanjaya wants to make it, he'll have to get used to it. AI mimics the real world in that you get a taste of what's in store for you when real fame comes calling.

As for Sanjaya's last performance, I don't know if I'd consider it desperate. I think that, like many of the other contestants, he was doing something different and unexpected. It's very risky. Sundance Head tried the rocker thing with "Jeremy" and failed. On the other hand, succeeding in taking such a risk yields great rewards. Fantasia will forever be known for her performance of "Summertime". In Sanjaya's case, I commend him for shaking things up, but overall it was still a poor performance.

Dory - Sanjaya was really sweet and a good singer back in the day. It was only after his first performance bombed that he got the jitters and turned into Michael Jackson and then Diana Ross.

By the way, I didnt write about this above but one of the rumors floating about was that Sanjaya was a replacement for that guy who auditioned with his cousin - the one with all the personality who sang the saddest version of Amazing grace and cracked everybody up by fake-yelling at the judges - but couldnt make it to the show coz he was like in jail or something. [anybody who remembers the particulars, feel free to jump in and correct me].

I personally thought that was crap coz when Simon was on Oprah he said he thought one of the kids was really good but he didnt "look" like an American Idol... and for some reason I'm convinced he meant Sanjaya. Back then anyway.

Man, I'm way too into this show. I need help.

My 2 cents, its irrational for people to react like they are to show that is made for entertainment. The real question is why are they reacting so? think about it hunger strikes and hosts leaving multi million dollar contracts over the fact that one particular contestant is doing alright? perhaps it is because he is brown, after all racial tensions run hotter than peoples feelings on how well someone sings.

Lol about Lulu! Now, he got the boot. I think they're planning to bring the Dawg and Paula over. She was so funny that time they had her and she kept yelling touchdown and Simon kept treating her like a mildly autistic 4 yr old.

More Sanjaya goodness - Sanjaya guest stars in The Office

...Andy, however, is perturbed by the sudden addition to The Office. Sanjaya will insist on singing to himself while he works, and we all know that's Andy's thing. Andy will challenge him to a singing duel and unfortunately Sanjaya will win. Why? For the same reason he's still on Idol;

NO!! IT'S FREE!! pay attention people, just like anything else in life, if you don't take a stand, you leave your fate in the hands of others who do. SO IF YOU DON'T VOTE, DON'T COMPLAIN!!

Whether Sanjaya drives US crazy you are defenitely developing full blown dementia. You are portraying as if Sanjaya's presence in top 10 as if it is national tragedy. It is a goddamn TV show. Your obsession with Sanjaya is really scary. Are you jealous of him? Did he hurt any of you guys? He is taking all the insults like a man despite his conservative nature. Kudos to him. You guys are hypocritic internet warriors only fit to write blogs after blogs. Nothing else. Why do you even take Televisions shows this seriously. Looks like you are not going to sleep until Sanjaya leaves. Good luck with your therapy!

Amrita, here's your answer:

For the last two weeks, Mr. Stern has been promoting a Web site created by a 24-year-old "American Idol" fan that encourages people to support the worst performer on the popular talent show. Their candidate has been Sanjaya Malakar, the off-key, lyric-fumbling, elaborately coiffed teenager who is perhaps the most talked-about "Idol" contestant ever.

"We're corrupting the entire thing," Mr. Stern said on his Sirius Satellite Radio show Thursday, the day after Mr. Malakar secured a place in the top nine finalists. "All of us are routing 'American Idol.' It's so great. The No. 1 show in television and it's getting ruined."

sujatha- there's no conspiracy in this ,last year i wanted Taylor to win and he won(incidentally he was VFTW's poster boy too) and this year Sanjaya is the star of the show. This is a TV reality show and people vote for a variety of reasons. You might think Madonna is a great singer but i hate her and Norah Jones makes me sleep but she still wins grammy's.I don't think people are stupid enough to be told whom to vote for and not.Why don't you visit the AI boards and see for yourself,Sanjaya's board has the maximum hits, just like Taylor last season.I think he is going to win this.

LOL you're right Hicks can't carry a tune to save his life but his spaz like antics and charisma bowled me over. And that LIVE clone Chris Daughtry's debut album was good enough to make it to No.1.but on the TV show he sucked and his intense persona was really boring.Yes AI is essentially a TV show no matter what others might want you to believe. As for the SOUL PATROL lol they're just a group of lusty middle-aged desperate and lonely housewives.I was trolling on Taylor's board last season so i know the type of shit that was being said, some lusted over his pelvic thrusts which they said reminded them of Elvis Presley.Yes that was the reason they voted for him,he reminded them of Elvis Presley.I just thought he made good television .This season that Freak Sanjaya is way ahead of them others ,he's unique and i love to see small girls crying when he performs,i wish AI brought more of them screaming ,crying and fainting teenagers. It makes good television.Seriously anyone can cut an album thesedays, all you need is a good PRODUCER as Paris slut Hilton proved. So stop getting carried away with all this shit,Sanjaya winning or losing is going to stop the war in Iraq or anything of that sort.
As for me being tone deaf , i listen to Bach,Chopin ,Beethoven and indian greats like Pandit Chaurasia

Amrita let me give a suggestion. Take a camera and shoot a video about why you don't like Sanjaya and post it in the youtube. There is already one guy who has done that. You can join him. Your life time ambition will be achieved.

You can try other ideas like Indian fans burn the effigies of Indian cricketers , you can burn the effigies of Sanjaya infront of Microsoft.

Another idea is you can barge into american idol show and get on the stage and strangle Sanjaya. Illegal. But still your goal will be achieved.

What else. You can go on fast until you see Sanjaya eliminated. Not a original idea. But worth trying.

Another idea is why don't you stop watching American idol?!

This is odd but I remember Sanjaya's "Aint No Mountain High Enough" as being bad. I listened again and it's actually good. No, not Lakisha or Melinda good, but it's not bad. I don't think he's out to be a power belter. He just wants to sing and that's it. It's not like he was way off key or doing anything bad either. His "You really got me" was a much better performance. I sort of rate him as an average singer with a great personality. I rate Lakisha as a perfect singer with a bland personality.

I think the way he handled the criticism from the judges was amazing. I think ALL the idols could take a lesson from him as this was exactly the best way to handle it. He looked cool.

#95
jz
April 1, 2007
04:01 PM

Oh and as for Howard Stern and v4tw ETC. I don't think they are causing this. I think they want people to believe they are doing it, but they aren't. There are people who read those sites and think they know a dirty little secret. Then they think that no one knows what is happening.

The fact is that Sanjaya is staying in because he's not boring and can sing 1/2 decent. If he was truly horrible, he would get less attention. v4tw wants people to believe he's horrible because that just makes v4tw look good and it then seems funnier. v4tw has been proven to lie in past years anyway.

What's happening is that he's an OK singer so people allow him to stay because they think he is fun. Again if he was totally horrible this never would have worked. Is he the BEST? No way, but the total combination is making it happen. Again, Melinda and Lakisha are the very best vocalists, but sometimes a different combination will work.

Amrita is more like she has said something. So she has to stick to it. That is called living in denial. Infact Sanjaya's version of bathwater is better than the original. Original sucks. I hated that song. You are too biased. Bathwater one of his better performances. He is not getting worse. What the hell are you talking? Only two weeks back Randy said that was his best performance. Infact you are the one trolling on and on about Sanjaya like a psycho.

And now we all know what Amit thinks is a "good performance" thats "better than the original" - forget your lyrics midway through the song, flub the tune and shake a fauxhawk to cover it all up - hey, presto! its great!

If there are more people like him around then the mystery of Sanjaya is solved! And to think, he has the gall (note spelling, pls!) to go around telling other people that they're too stubborn to admit it when they're wrong!
