I don't think The Hindu would stoop so low to doctor letters, though from my personal experience, I know that they do reduce the length of letters.

In any case, regular readers of Hindu who write to them, would instinctively use the vocab that is thrust on them everyday.

Cosmic Voices:
I agree with you that THE HINDU supports Left government and its actions. Sometimes there are more than three news items on a single page describing (and many times supporting) Left governments' decisions and actions. If one were to go by coverage given in THE HINDU, Brinda Karat is more popular than Aishwarya Rai. Earlier even Medha Patkar was given extensive coverage (including the front page- first news item). Now that she is opposing the decision of the Left Government, THE HINDU has dropped her from the 'most favorite' list.

In spite of this left leaning, I like THE HINDU, which I believe is the 'best of the worst' that Indian newspapers have to offer.

The English media in general are biased in favour of the Washington consensus which is making India safe for Goldman Sachs and not making India safe from Goldman Sachs. Moreover, the media dependence on Corporate advertising makes them subservient to corporate and business interests.Economic issues are debated in the English dailies in stark black and white terms with the usual blather about Shining India and the reform process. That being so the Hindu publications refreshingly offer the left view of politics.

This does not excuse Hindu from supporting WB government on Singur issue.

Even I've been reading The Hindu and N. Ram seems to use different yardsticks for different issues. During the Narmada Valley controversy last year, The Hindu along with Frontline carried out a propaganda campaign against the project by giving lots of space for Arundhati Roy and Praful Bidwai in the Op-Ed pages. Under Letters to the Editor, one could see only those letters which were supporting The Hindu's viewpoint.

The Singur issue came and The Hindu did a complete U-turn. The paper which openly tried to shape public opinion against displacement of people from their lands (by selective publishing) during the Narmada issue is now supporting the displacement for the Tata project at Singur.

Also note that in his editorials, N. Ram has directed his ire only at Mamata Banerjee. He has carefully avoided bringing in the names of Medha Patkar, Arundhati Roy and Praful Bidwai, all of who were actively involved in the protests at Singur.

That Indian Marxists are a bunch of elitist cheats is well known but I never expected The Hindu to stoop to such low levels.

Another issue is Letters to the Editor. I have a hunch. I wonder if The Hindu puts doctored or manufactured letters under Letters to the Editor. The next time you read the letters, notice the language used in all the letters. It's bafflingly similar in tone and vocab! I may sound ridiculous but it's possible because there's no way anyone can check if those letters are really real and anyone who dares to raise that issue will be branded "against media freedom", "intolerant", "fascist" etc.
