Indian Cricket - Drop Tendulkar
The Comic Project
People will point towards Tendulkar's greatness, his record, how he has been a tireless performer for India and how he was the top scorer in the first innings of this test match. People will point out that others had equal responsibility, but the fact also is that Tendulkar let us down twice in this match - in the first innings by getting out when he should have guided the team to safety (Laxman remained not out on 50 right?) and in the second innings, he gets out for a duck. A Duck.
Every time it matters, he fails. He comes back from an injury, scores a hundred, everyone sings praises and he starts flopping and flops the worst when it matters the most. But he is given another chance to do god knows what. Does he really deserve a spot in the team? Seriously - he has flopped as miserably as a bunch of Mithun films - oh bad analogy - Mithun films I hear break even and turn in a small profit for his producer.
One might argue who will replace him, even if it is for a single test and what if the replacement performs as badly but how does it matter? We have a 33 year old who is not performing anyway when his peers, people like Jayasuriya, Lara, Ponting, Warne are putting in everything into their game and winning it for their teams despite their age, injuries and "limitations". Does it not make sense in giving our greatest player a signal that he really is not indispensable? That we won't tolerate non-performance?
Drop him. Don't rest him for an injury - publicly drop him for non-performance and let's see him come back into the team hungry for runs, and desperate to prove himself as the greatest because right now he is anything but that.
P.S. He might score a century in a drawn match or be a top scorer in a low scoring match and India might win a test match, but it doesn't matter. We trusted his ability to deliver and he has failed repeatedly, now he has to win it back or go run his restaurant.

@tendulkar fan: I'd just have said
If (Tendulkar.exists()) {
System.out.println("You have a problem");
}
:-)
I would go and say further
If (Tendulkar.getsOut()) :
System.out.println("It was an unplayable ball");
}
Look at his record - it speaks for itself - a great batsman who falls short when it matters the most. He has a couple of years to set the record straight. God bless him.
@null: Can't you see that I love the guy but am disappointed at how he fails? Can't you see that I am disappointed at how he fails because I love the guy?

He has too many problems1)He always gets leg before wicket to the in cutter 2)He is extremely vulnerable in the start of his innings 3)He cannot decide whether to play slow or play his shots 4)He wants to play the senior role in which case he should retire while he still has some dignity.

tendulkar....has never been a great cricketer..out of the bet 15 test innings how many spots has he got? think about lara the only player to have three spots there....
even if you consider the best 15 one day international innings there will be some other player right up there....jayasuriya,ponting etc...
tendulkar is a selfish cricketer...he does not have many match winning knocks....he always performs when India loses or when the match is a draw....The main problem in Indian cricket is money...80% of the total revenue in cricket comes from indian cricket...because Indian population is huge and crciket is the most popular game....If Tendulkar performs,Dhoni performs the companies make money...so the media makes a big deal of the Indian player...When media hypes,pespi or other companies give money to the media..this is the truth accept it or not...
When Tendulkar dosent perform out of nowhere some one would say" tendulkar is the best"
Even Brad Man said that probably he got money...be smart guys...No one does this in NBA,Tennis,Ice Hockey,Foot ball or rugby performance matters......
be smart guys...its all money for tendulkar..he is loaded and it time to chuck him out permanently...ganguly was a good captain for sure..he had that motivation which rahul dravid dosent have..

@All: The next 5 days will say if he still has it in him. If he gets a real good score and gets us a series win, or helps draw the match - fantastic - I would just hope (barely) that he continues in the same vein and keep my fingers crossed. If he fails - in a winning or a losing match - (?)
@Ajit: Faith is too strong a word .. not in a human please :-) Trust is fine though. He doesn't need to be part of the Indian cricket team to take care of his "illnesses" for free. He just has to endorse a hospital for that ;-) but that said, it is an unfair comment just as others think my opinion of "dropping him" is unfair :-)
@null: a message needs to go out to him that he "can" be dropped
@bachchan: the one thing that makes him look most vulnerable is the way he doubles up, his hands almost touching the ground when the ball gets through his defences. He looks so ordinary.
@null: I am sure bachchan doesn't need to be the coach to tell him his weaknesses. He is just as tendulkar crazy as all of us, but can't bear to see him in such bad form
@nishanth: Selfish - no. Would never call him that. I doubt any of our cricketers fit into that template.

i believe tendulkar and sehwag ought to be dropped!
zaheer, Ganguly and pathan have all been dropped from the indian team for non performance earlier as have dravid,laxman and kumble who were excluded from ODI teams in favour of players more suitable for the abbreviated version of the game. Irrespective of sachin's status, the parameters of performance cannot be overlooked! Sachin is not god!
he is human and ought to be treated like his mortal team-mates in matters relating to performance!

In the last 5 years, Sachin has scored 5 centuries in Test cricket while Ponting ran amok with 23!!!
Truly, I feel that Sachin has lost his interest in the game. I feel a break will do him good, so that he can rearrange his priorities and hopefully launch a blitzkrieg in World Cup 07, as he did so memorably in 2003.

tendulkar should have been dropped long back, looks like there is a media driven campaign to keep him up there, may be he is cute and cuddly and everyone's favorite child, but it is time, high time he performed. he fails when he is most needed while Jayasuriya, Ponting and many others perform when most needed, even Ganguly has done that in the past. Chappel got it all wrong, he should have dropped tendulkar first, but he knew that the outrage would mean no job for him, contract or no contract, he just did not have the guts to do that. Ganguly in spite of his belligerence is not so well connected or popular as Tendulkar so the ungracious drop. so has tendulkar performed in ganguly's absence? i thought it was the other way round.

This seemed like a really raw and unfinished thought.. And also out of share frustration.. But you cannot drop somebody just because he is not performing up to the level you want him. He is a batsman and his duty is to get runs.. And he does that better than anybody in that team. after every season if he is in top 3 or top 5 scoring player in the team you cannot drop him without dropping other players who are scoring less than him.
Oh.. And I just realized that this was written on December 2006... I think the writer probably had a change of heart by now..
