The idea behind sending a person to prison have manifold manifestations...One of the important things to consider is the fact that the person will be reformed once he is made to under go the punishment and once he is out of prison...

Had Sanjay been punished for 5 years soon after he committed crime it would have made much more sense...but to punish a person after 15 odd years in which he has already spent 18 odd months in prison with a rigrous punishment of another 3 more years just so that one has to meet statutory punishment period will be too harsh i feel.

I think court should take into account Sanjay's behaviour after he had committed crime till today and decide punishment based on the fact that he is a transformed and reformed citizen today. And i am reasonably sure that courts will pay due consideration to this.

Dutt Jr. has had more than his share of second chances. Being true to him, he has made amends (as an actor) in his reel life. From an angry young bloke with a wooden face to the much loved Khalnayak to Munna Bhai, there is a positive growth. But his real life has taken a nose dive. From his troubled drug addiction days to being caught with terrorist nexus, he by no measure is a role model.

Special treatment meted out to him or any other actors (Salman Khan anyone..) is a bad side of Indian justice system. Let's face it, in India actors have always been larger than life. They have been worshipped in temples built for them(sic !) and some fans have even immolated themselves when their stars die. If the adulation these actors enjoy is of astronomic proportions, the justice for their crimes should match it.

Given all of this, it is time that the judiciary piggybacked on this fame as well. Use the star power and send a strong message that their transgressions will not be tolerated, a la Martha Stewart. Ms. Stewart's crime was not that grave as compared to many others that get away with murder. But <i><u>'sending the right message'</u></i> was behind it. Let's make Dutt the poster child and send a strong signal.

<i>There are hundreds of murderers & rapists in India who never been put behind the bars for whatever reasons and here this guy served 18 months in jail... blah blah blah</i>

So what?!

<i>...you very well know that there are thousands of guys in India who have guns (without license) that they carry to protect themselves and I am not sure how many of them are in jail?</i>

Again, so what?! What if others have guns? You remind me of my childhood.

Kid A complains "Kid B hit me!" Teacher pulls up Kid B and asks why. Kid B complains back "Kid C is also hitting Kid A. Why only me?! Waaaaaaa!"

You seem to have a soft corner for Sanjay Dutt. He's a great actor. I'm a fan of Sanjay The Actor. But I like to see Sanjay The Criminal behind bars. And I'd like to see <i>Anybody</i> The Criminal behind bars.

Just because there are many others who have guns doesnt mean this guy should be given less punishment. And would you employ the same logic if Osama Bin Laden is sentenced to prison? "Hey! There are many other terrorists out there! Why only Bin Laden? This is injustice!"

Here, you have a criminal who has been convicted by the court and you have tens of thousands squealing in SMSes to TV channels "Sanju Baba is innocent! Please release him!", "This is all a conspiracy to defame the Dutt family!", "Whatever has happened, Sanju Baba should be forgiven for this one time! He's such a big star!"

I hate this crap. People have lost their minds. They're no longer able to differentiate.

You are absolutely a feminist and really needs to learn between right wrong? There are hundreds of murderers & rapists in India who never been put behind the bars for whatever reasons and here this guy served 18 months in jail because he was considerd to be a terrorist and as yuo very well know Indian Judicial system itself has acquited him from that crime!! This guy has served 18 months already for what?

I fully agree that, for him carrying guns was a silly thing to do BUT he did not use these weapons to hurt anyone. He did make a mistake but you are a smart cookie and you very well know that there are thousands of guys in India who have guns (without license) that they carry to protect themselves and I am not sure how many of them are in jail? Again I do not support that but 18 montsh of jail is already too much of punishment for something that did not hurt anyone!!

[EDITED] I am not a great fan of Sanjay Dutt but this guy seems like regrets about the the mistake he has made and wants a second chance. I bet you that you very well know no one is perfect in this world. He has served jail time and if I was the judge I would have let him go. You also have made mistakes in life, ask yourself!
Act normal baby, For a change Try to love men instead of dogs and then see the difference!!!

It's not about loving the actor or not..the fact is that he has been convicted and therefore needs to do the time in prison. By giving lame excuses....he cannot be allowed to avoid it for his own sweet reasons.

Sanjay Dutt's reasons for extensions are quite silly. I think he is playing the 'humanitarian' card- to rally people's support. Indian public would gleefully extend that support.

Judiciary and public opinion should be separated. We are seeing this again and again that public opinion seem to have an impact on judiciary- that's not healthy!
