I agree with sami. People are forgetting that Open Source and Free Software DOES NOT mean monetarily free software. It just means freedom to use the software.
Companies which are directly involved in developing Open Source Software (apart from those mentioned by sami) like RedHat, Mandriva, Ubuntu , Postgresql, are doing great. Others who indirectly use open source software for their product porfolio like Monta Vista, Lynux Works, are minting money as well.

For that matter, Open Source Software business is proving liucrative for yours truly as well (My own The OpenSourceDeal : http://osd.byethost8.com/).
Not to mention hundreds of similar ventures ALL OVER the world.
My main motivation to start such an venture was exactly ro prove that you CAN make money out of OSS.

Everyone just keeps forgetting that open source software or Free(dom) software is NOT the same as free(of cost) or freeware software.

Don't the programmers working at MySql AB draw salaries? Aren't there huge expenses in developing the Apache web server? There is a LOT of money to be made, and being made, in Open Source development model; people only need to figure out how to properly set the model up. RedHat, JBoss, Apache and MYSQL are just some examples who got it absolutely right.
