CD Review: Bommarillu

Bommarillu audio sleeveThe audio of Siddharth's new Telugu flick, Bommarillu, was released on July 15, after much delay. I, for one, was eagerly awaiting this, not least because the music director, Devi Sri Prasad, seems to have gone through some sort of revival since last year's blockbuster, Nuvvostante Nenoddantana.

There are seven songs in all in the album and while I wouldn't lie through my teeth and say they are all absolutely fantabulous, most of them are good. There's a heavy Western influence - I think we have my favourite, A R Rahman, to thank for that! In some places, the beats seem to intrude a bit but most of the songs are of the foot-tapping variety.

"Appudo Ippudo" - Siddharth, the multi-talented boy wonder, sings this song. This is a fast number and in my opinion, the best track in the album. It has a good pace to it, it makes an easy listen and Sid's trademark bouncy energy has permeated his delivery, which makes it for a great number. His pronunciation has improved 100% since his Chukkallo Chandrudu days. If you cannot believe me, then go back and listen to "Yadalo Eppudo" and you'll understand what I am talking about.

"Bommani Geesthe", sung by Gopika and Jeans Srinivas, is a melodious number. The lyrics are very sweet and the music the song is set to is quite good too. It is a slow number, one of the two in the album. The flute in the beginning of the song sets the mood quite well.

Siddharth
The composer turns singer with "Kaani Ippudu" and does a decent job of it. The song has a catchy tune and a nice, swinging beat. Your feet start tapping to the beat before you realise it. I am sure we will be hearing the song's remixed versions on the club floors soon enough.

The opening chords of this song, "We have a Romeo", reminded me of those of the song "Karka Karka" from Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu. This is a fleeting similarity and the song branches off into its own route soon enough, with the bloke singing about looking for his Juliet. Typically, he lists the characteristics of his girl and the song proceeds well enough. When Andrea comes in with the English verse, it somehow doesn't sit well. I reckon the references to Romeo and Juliet have something to do with this interlude - as long as it doesn't translate to a Genelia on a balcony, with Sid somewhere on the ground level, singing his heart out, I shall be happy!

"Laloo Darvaja" didn't make much of an impression on me. The same thumping beats that are found in every song plays a prominent role in this one as well. After a verse and a chorus of this, there's a slow interlude by the female singer which doesn't gel at all with the main song. After this, the song continues on its previous vein, making me wonder what just happened.

"Nammaka Thappani", sung by Sagar and Sumangali, is the other slow number and is a decent one as well. But by now, the thumping beats have begun annoying me. The composer has to pay special attention to the use of the same four beats - after a bit, it feels quite repetitive.

Though the album is a decent enough listen, it lacks the freshness of NVNV. The best bit, for me, was Siddharth belting out "Appudo Ippudo". It remains to be seen if that is enough to make it a hit.

Writing is my passion and music is my soulmate. When I have a book in my hand and my music blasting in my ears, I am on top of the world. I would love to be a published author someday. But till then, I shall enthrall you all with my creative genius. :)

Hi DG, who's this actor? I saw him in a movie (boy loves girl, boy's parents say no b/c they're rich, girl's family is not, boy puts his foot down, girl's brother says no b/c boy is stuck up and rich, boy says he'll prove his love by working on the farm, boy ends up saving girl's brother's farm, girl's brother is happy, boy's father comes around, all's well that ends well) that had me all soppy and crying at the end and quite a bit in between. :) Really liked him and the movie - but then it doesn't take much to patao me, just give a love story, any love story. :)

Ahhh Suj, my twin-sister in movie taste!! ha ha! This 'actor' as you loosely call him, is my man Siddharth (I really sound like a teen groupie or what?) - Karan Singhania in RDB?? That movie u so succintly summarised was his first major hit, Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana (NVNV for short). He used to be Mani Ratnam's assistant director and when director Shankar saw him, he cast Sid in his movie 'Boys' and the rest is history.

He's good or what? Tho I adored him in Ayutha Ezhuthu (the tamil orig of Yuva - he plays the role that Vivek Oberoi did in Hindi) and NVNV, I was floored in RDB - I didn't know he had this new dimension to him.

Is that enough Sidhology for you today? ;)

If you are intersted, here's more. Sid did his MBA in SP Jain, Mumbai, one of the premier management institues in the country and then took up directing when Maniratnam spotted him, thanks to the umpteen speeches and theatre plays that he was involved in. He is also an excellent writer. So he's not just a good actor/singer/ asst.director, he's a multi-faceted chap!!

(If only we knew his email we could have invited him to write for DC, what say Suj? ;) )

In case you are wondering how I knew all this, my teammate was his classmate at SP Jain.. :)

Wot??!! You haven't heard "ayyappadi"? Hmmm. It's an expression you use when you're resting your tired behind after a long day, said to the accompaniment of creaking bones. Also an exclamation conveying surprise, "is that so?", sort of like "ayyoyyo".

And I can still see the pics. It's a jinx my dear, specifically afflicting your computer. Hee hee. By the way, where have you hosted this? Let me check.

Ok, that's the problem then. You must host photographs with a third party host such as Photobucket or Flikr or Imageshack. They cannot be hosted on your blog. If you do, then we run into problems like this one. I'll send you an e-mail with the instructions.

Suj:
Okie dokey - I shall follow instructions once I get home from work, in about, hmmm half an hour? I would like to mention that this is the first time the images are playing up for me. I still think someone jinxed poor Sid ole boy ole man.
;)

Kishore:
ada rama is more of a cousin to appadi then a synonym, me thinks. ada rama is more an exclamation at times of trouble, isnt it?

Actually ada rama doubles up in many ways.. we can have all those interpretations based on the context.. mostly used by the old-folks though.. :)

I haven't listened too many times but think I like them a little bit more then you do (probably cause I haven't listened to that many Telugu soundtracks yet :)). I think the WHAR song both sounds and looks like Girlfriend from Boys.

Re. the number: Whatever.. a girl can dream, right ;)!

Cesmi,
You are right about WHAR sounding like GF (the visuals are quite comparable too). But Sid's dance moves are miles better in WHAR, I thot! Tho the songs are okay, I prefer NVNV tracks - Adire, Adire, need I say more?

Kishore,
