Book Review: RFID Essentials - An Excellent Text on RFID

RFID Essentials is a concise desktop reference useful for the expert as well as for the merely curious put together in a very readable set of eleven chapters and two appendices by Bill Glover and Himanshu Bhatt. The flow of the discussion allows the two broad categories of readers ,the generalists and the specialists in RFID to have their respective concerns covered appropriately without causing a disconnect within the explanation. The Book begins with introduction to RFIDs and takes us through discussions on RFID architecture and its components,there is also light thrown on related topics such as security, privacy and manageability vis-a-vis RFID closing with a gaze by the authors into the crystal ball to try and predict the future of this promising technology.
RFID is an acronym for Radio frequency identification . This technology is utilises the concepts of electromagnetic engineering for use in identification mechanisms. For the uninitiated ones in South Asia and everywhere, examples of present-day identification mechanisms are the optical bar code technology becoming commonplace in the shopping malls. Covering a wide range of applications from product tracking to security, the RFIDs seem to have some really significant advantages over the older technologies like line-of-sight requirement for the laser bar-code readers, the specific positional requirement of magnetic strips on the credit cards vis-a-vis the card reader. As has been described in the first chapter of the book, RFIDs are ideal for situations where alignment of the reader and the id tag is not possible or not desirable. Also the frequency ranges used allow the reader to see through the item to the tag even if the tag is facing away from the reader.
The authors introduce the possibility of an "internet of things" by means of RFID technology and ONS - Object Naming Service - which is the equivalent of Directory Naming Service . EPCglobal is among the industry bodies that are proposing the mechanisms for standardizing the exchange of RFID data.The authors describe in depth the possible integrated assembly of RFID system into the enterprise.The important facets of RFID system architecture are explained keeping in mind the EPCglobal standards. The interaction of EPC ,ISO and other bodies is allowing a more uniform standardization in the form of ISO/IEC 18000 for RFID tags although older implementations of EPC and ISO may require separate readers.
There are the various possible tag communication protocols with the latest protocol being called the "Gen2 protocol". There is also the reader protocol which defines the communication between the reader and the RFID middleware and RFID application which is an important component in RFID deployments. There is an interesting discussion on the possibility of an Orwellian society due to widespread adoption of RFID technology and how to protect privacy. The security risk of corporations and individuals alike again gets a new dimension with the granularity of data available through this technology.
One of the two appendices explains the EPC identity encodings which are the equivalent of bar codes for RFID devices.The second appendix provides a comprehensive list of references for further exploration of the topic.The website of this book is at http://www.rfidessentials.com .
There are two points which would have added value to this excellent text. First of these is the effect of RFIDs on the environment in the course of their origin through destruction cycle or any possibilities about the same which seems to have missed the authors' concern completely. Also would have been helpful if the topic on encoding covered in chapter three had a few figures just to save a bit of time looking up other communication texts.
The book is definitely recommended for anybody seriously looking to design ,build or integrate with RFID systems ,with or without prior exposure to this fascinating technology.
