it isnt love that makes anakin weak, it is the fear of loss. He fears those he loves dying, while harry has experienced it from a very young age, and excepts that it is something that cannot be beaten. Voldemort fears death, and strives to conquer, i think that is where riddle and anakin are the same. Both fear death and/or loss, and try to conquer it, which leads to their death and downfall.
However, in the end vader sees the error of his ways, thanks to the love of his son, and overcomes his dark side and redeems himself, while voldemort was given the chance and scoffed at it.
I think that is where the differ, Anakin became a sith lord because of love, and it was also his redeeming factor, while Tom never knew love, and thought it made a person weak.
Love isn't what makes you weak, what makes you weak is not excepting things that are inescapable in life

think what you think, anakin is the most powerful, voldemort it's ok, but lord vader causes real fear, and it's power is bigger, and it will be more if obi-wan would never cutted his legs and arm off

Not a big HP fan but the tale of Darth Vader is fascinating!

I had written on it earlier -

"..if not for the visions that Anakin sees...and the fear of losing Padme.....perhaps Anakin would never have been lured to join the dark side.

And ironically it was the very fact that Anakin turns over to the dark side that ultimately results in the death of Padme!

Its almost like he were destined to turn over to the dark side!! "

Interesting, but could have been longer. You are tapping into the archetypal concepts behind these characters - the flawed hero, hamartia, and catharsis at the end.

I wonder if Tom Riddle will be redeemed by the blood of Harry Potter (<i>You're my father?</i>)

You committed the ultimate sin by naming "the one who must not be named" in your blog. You will pay for this crime. The "Dark Mark", the sign of you know who is already hovering above your head.

Be careful!

H80 - real sorry for giving you the shock of your life re: Dumbledore. Since the book isn't a recently released one, I thought it was safe to come out with the plot details etc. Mea culpa!
Rohan and Siddhartha, thank you for your thoughts. I shall go and ponder about the points you have both raised!
May the Force be with you!

Interesting issue to think out. I like your thoughts on how letting in love paved darth vader's path to the dark side. As far as who is stronger, I would say Vader as he was never dependent on anyone in his rise to power unlike he-who-must-not-be-named.

btw, plent of people think that Dumbeldore is not dead, but its a well worked out plan to mislead he-who-must-not-be-named and his band.

blog etiquette clearly implies, that when revealing a plot spoiler in a posting, you INDICATE it. you simply type 'SPOILER' in a sub-heading. Simple consideration for readers like me, who have chosen to read Harry Potter only recently and I am only on Book #3. My mouth is still open in shock.

You don't see the sanity in killing off Dumbledore? It's a classic (if a little cliched) element of young boy stories, bringing in a father figure after the actual one was last, and then, when things are all coming down, getting rid of this father figure as well.

Seems like Potter himself is closer to Anakin, he could always have potentially ridden that line between good and evil, although the 'sanctity' of his 'pure heart' has been proven, book after book.
