India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Bhutan have a long history of Accountability issues and accountability is a key requirement of good governance. Not only governmental institutions but also the private sector and civil society organizations must be accountable to the public. Who is accountable to whom varies depending on whether decisions or actions taken are internal or external to an organization or institution. In general an organization or an institution is accountable to those who will be affected by its decisions or actions. Accountability cannot be enforced without transparency and the rule of law.

A phrase that I say quite often in politics is that it doesn't really matter where you are, but where you are facing. It comes up in conversations comparing political issues in different countries, such as conversations about political corruption. While India has had a problem, its direction is towards better accountability and transparency. While Canadians perceive themselves as above this, I perceive Canada as facing in the direction of increasing corruption. While we should always remember where we come from and be proud of the accomplishments of our predecessors, we can only really influence the present and are responsible for the present. Canadians can't be apathetic to the direction we are facing simply because our predecessors travelled far in a different direction.
